Powered roll over car jig.

Firstly thank you all so so much for all your help and mostly encouragment..
so this is the idea. Im restoring a classic mini ( slightly rusty obviously) and i managed to get a roll over jig a couple of years ago and then stripped and blasted the whole thing and primed her.
So the welding began so i invested in a proper welder from the advice off all you welding magicians.
So now i kinda worked out the power source to turn the jig but its the gearing im struggling with...
I bought a 240v scaffolding hoist 500/1000kg so thought i can use it to intall the engine.
So any ideas on attaching the hoist. I thought chain and sprocket but need it to spin slower.....help.

Have you doubled up the wire rope through a pulley at the hook?

If so and it's still too fast then extra pulleys is the simplest way to go

Attach the hook to a convenient point so the winch pulls it round.

Haha... i did just made a brew and sat and pondering...
Correct me if im wrong but that will only turn it one way 180°.
I was thinking of loosing the steel rope and some how attached a chain and sprocket.
But not worked that out yet...
Would it have to be geared down/up??

as long as you get the jig set nicely down the centre of the car they tend to not be too bad to spin round by hand.

Don't think I would bother trying to make a powered version for a mini shell, its not like they are heavy.

you could weld an old m/bike chain around the perimeter of the roll over bar & attach a sprocket ,that matches the chain,to the output shaft of the hoist motor -assuming the speed was slow enough.you would need some guides to get it to run true & at the correct distance .

PS there are 13 episodes for you rummage through there is only a few minutes of it but enough to get ideas, we used a gear box from an industrial machine with a handle it was about 4\1 7 150mm deep Binkys is electric

You want a little gear/sprocket on the motor driving a big one on the frame. I would call that gearing down.

Welll i had one bad rear quarter and one good one... needless to say it kinda slipped out my hand as the locking pins on the end and im stood on the side... boosch into the garage wall...
Did i mention its a single garage.... ;-(

if you really want to use the winch...

you need two steel ropes on the winch, wrap one around clockwise and one anticlockwise

then have another drum on the jug and wrap them around the same way again

pull the winch away so it's tight (you might have to rotate it all the way one way and, on one rope is only kust on the jig and then tighten it up?)


that way, as the winch rotates, one rope gets longer and one gets shorter

same on the jug end :-)

IMO a hydraulic engine crane would be more useful than an electric hoist. It could be used to lift the shell onto it's side as well as swopping engines. Mine is probably 15 years old and gets used for all sorts of thing - not just lifting engines I've got a 240v hoist on roof of my carport but as already said way too fast and uncontrollable for delicate jobs like engine changing.

Ill ave nosey on the e of bays for a hydraulic crane... also thinking about a kind of hand winch.... maybe 40:1 , attached that to the hoist..because im lazy and it will look cool.

so powering it will stop that as against turning by hand

No... i mentioned the reason in my first post.. or ar least i did..
Atm i have to walk the the front un pin tye locking pin then kinda shimmy to the side holding the car steady.. then rotate to the right position.. or at least near then shimmy back to the locking pin hoping the car doesn't roll over and bosh the garage wall.
So my idea to have it powered is i can operate the jig while standing at the locking mechanism keeping an eye on if i will hit anything.
That make sense?
