Righto got my reduction gearbox of ebay.. nice n cheap. Looks quality. Mate at work said its made in Italy usually a good sign.
So now to attach the gearbox to the winch.... any ideas??

I have a mr grumpys rollover jig my car a simca 1000 is attached by the wheel hubs and then tilted by hand its quite easy however I had a operation and was having dialysis through my stomach so i could not strain or do any heavy lifting .so i attached a eye bolt to the floor and attached a little £20 hand winch and pulled the car over really simple and easy. I help out in a body shop and they use scaffold poles through the middle of the cars and they spin really easillly these are completly stripped unlike mine.

Here's the system I came up with for rotating the spit I made from the scrap I had laying around.



The rotating system is made up of a couple of gears and chain with a reduction gearbox that came out of a lorry brush wash. The motor was 3 phase so I didn't make it totally electric, instead I just turn it with a ratchet and when its in the position required I tighten a 12mm bolt to clamp it into position.

I was going to make it adjustable so that the center of rotation of the spit is aligned with the center of gravity of the car (not just where its easiest to connect). However the gear box and ratchet worked so well that there was no need . Having said that when the car is over center if anything goes wrong (something breaks, gear strips, etc.) you are going to get a fair few hundred kgs heading towards you at a rate of knots so I fabricated and installed a clamp so that there is always a 12mm bolt to clamp the car in what ever position is required. I made it so that a bolt can be installed in the next slot before the clamping bolt is removed.

could you get a worm and gear mechanism to turn the jig at one end? easy enough to wind by hand or attach a motor if you like. looks like thats what DCAL is using in his pictures

out of curiosity how big is your roll over jig?
mine was quite small and by hand i could turn my car over.


admittedly it was a bit of a pain to hold in any one postion as the brake wasnt very good but it could easily be solved.

Arh cheers... i went a bit ott with the chain. went for 1/2 inch pitch. looks pretty heavy duty. might somehow put a locking mechanism in it somewhere.
Still looking at worm gears tho. lol

look on ebay, they're on pretty regularly, search for worm drive

Works well, like it. I bought a scaffold winch to use as a power source for a bead roller, do you know what rpm your winch rotates at? Think mine was about 60rpm.

Yeh thats my power source... went a tad ott bought the 500kg/1000kg winch
the rpm is 60 so obviously had to bung a reduction in there... just imagine!
Looking into this worm drive now. like it alot just gota find one now.

Exactly what i was thinking, the pawl can be flipped either way. even a hand winch plate can be used.

The only problem with the flywheel and pawl approach is once the weight of the car goes over-center you need to remember to flip the pawl or it will have no effect. Another approach would be to have a spring loaded double acting pawl that you need to hold off while your turning the car.
Big advantage of the worm drive is it's non reversible (you can't drive the worm screw by turning the worm gear so it's fail safe). Having said that I also added a locking mechanism to secure the car in whatever orientation required.
