What is the maximum length one can have sticking out before it starts to whip with 5cm bar?

The whiplash is overcome by making an arbor to sit inside the spindle at the back of the lathe, a few have to be made for smaller stock

Basically its like a flanged ring that sits in the spindle and the inner ring is precision bored to suit the stock used ie you could have a range of em going from 10mm up depending on the spindle inner diameter.

DON'T FLOG IT

You can do small work in a big machine but you cant do big work in a small machine.

You can remain married with a small machine, you can get a divorce with a big machine... (think of all the time to build things... Mmm)

A lathe is NEVER too big! OK you may need a small one as well but you'll be suprised how often you are knocking on the upper limit!

My first lathe back in 1971 was a round head Colchester Student in an 8'x6' shed in the garden. I had a hole in the wall in line with the headstock for long bar stock.

Two rules for workshop layout:

Headstocks away from walls
Grinders point away from walkways (applies to all types off hand, surface and cylindrical)

Perhaps you need to look out for a big miller as well- all the small stuff can go in the living room .
