Choker hitch is typical of the way we use a sling never realised hitch angle had so much affect on sling capacity .

I went and bought some shackles and round slings, I have to say they are quite different from the flat webbing I got. Like the more flexible, more roundish profile of the round slings.

Soft shackles are interesting and seem to have much higher ratings than steel ones. No way to open them however, which is a limitation.

I have some large v belts 5 foot long I use for lifting things. just loop them round stuff and hook them on not much chance of them snapping

If you have to tie something and there is no other option, I like the bowline knot. They used to pull tanks out the mud with that in ww2 and it doesnt bind, easy to undo. Worth adding to the memorised knot list!

I used the 2T round sling for the rear and for the front I had one 3m lifting strap and I used 1 m round sling to extend it the right amount.

Working in boatyards most of my life i have seen a lot of different techniques used & a lot of them were well dodgy. Saw a big 8" wide sling fail on a travel hoist some years back, where they had been dragging the free end about on the concrete it had worn through a lot of the stitching, the loop simply opened up & dropped the stern of a 36ft powerboat three feet straight onto its rudders & props, It bent & mangled the twin rudders, propshafts & A brackets. Proper expensive. At least nobody was underneath.
Other thing to look at is what is your lifting gear actually hung off? some of the buildings i worked in were distinctly crumbly & alot of woodworm...
