New Arc are a British manufacturer based in Newcastle.

They DO make a few products in Newcastle, these products have a very good reputation in the Offshore oil industry and Middle east etc, but they also 'buy' in some products and have there name put on, that Tig that someone posted a picture of is an example of that.

You can still see the name Rhiman or somthing, which I belive is Chinese

The New-Arc machine pictured above is indeed made in China but the vast majority of their stuff is made here, in the North East. These companies are simply reacting to market demand, ie.you lot wanting HIGH quality at LOW prices...never could be achieved until China entered the game. And so these companies are now having to farm out some of their production to meet market demand. THE DIFFERENCE from buying direct from China (or the Johnny come lately set-ups importing direct to make a quick buck) is that reputable companies will have the machines designed to a certain specification and have their own quality control in place. They also, most importantly, offer after-sales service (which doesn't seem to bother a lot of buyers, but that's your problem when it goes wrong ).
Most of the big Western manufacturers now have, or are looking at, having kit made in China. Very sad if you ask me, as it will mean wholesale job losses, but that's what you want so that's what you get!

Thanks matt that is what i was trying to say. im in the market for a new or seconhand ac dc tig. if i had 3 phase it would be an easy and cheap choice
i would live without the portable bit and buy a big miller syncrowave but ive
only single phase. so im looking at other choices the mta or portamig kit does
look ok also r tech very convincing bloke. the lincoln v 205 would be the other
im sure the lorch is topnotch r tech also said that but its to much money for
me only playing in the carage. cheers ocean

I would suggest getting a good quality 2nd hand Industrial machine, from someone like your good self!

Don't forget that the old Miller stuff will run quite cheerfully on single phase -- just a matter of connecting it up differently. This absolutely obvious from the rear panel and a few folk here are doing just that.

Yep, don't discount those big old machines, I have a Miller Dialarc running off a single phase supply, at 216kg it's not what you'd call portable though.

Mine's probably about 25 years old, big old beast but most definitely built to last!

Mine is 35 years old and still going strong (Airco, made by Miller and same as the DialArcs.)

The later DialArcs had some control electroinics that might fail, but not to difficult to replace. The older ones the only electronics are the rectifiers. Real simple.

For most work, yes. They have a hot start feature for arc, AC/DC, HF start and a high OCV (80-90V.) ALso their power output is rathed at at least 60% (older ones are 100%.) The Dialarcs/Aircos were production machines designed to run 24/7.

Most of the earlier ones had fixed AC balance (my 1973 Airco has 50/50 or 60/40). Not easily changed but most users never do.

In TIG, inverters add variable-frequency that is real helpful on thin aluminum. They also have slope up/down and pulse modes that can eliminate the need for a footpedal.

They are just as good for mild steel. Good enough on most aluminum. You need to go to a high-end AC/DC inverter with all the fancy features to beat them.
