Well they’re fly by wire, the aircraft won’t make you make a bad mistake, you’re involved in aviation as I am, you’re trained to fly what you fly, they’re not going to make it to a typhoon if they don’t know what they’re doing. For RAF pilots it’s an extremely tight learning curve, the actual flying of the aircraft is just the beginning of a much larger steep learning curve, there’s so many systems to master.

Oh I know, I was being facetious. If he’s lucky I might admit he’s a good pilot on my death bed, until then it’s the computers doing the hard work

Some great pics, i worked at Coningsby in the maintenance hangar until a few years ago. Its a good aeroplane to work on but very complicated. Unfortunately working on jets isnt as much straight forward ‘just get things done’ as it used to be.

A great apprenticeship if your youngsters are not sure what they want to do.

My grand daughter and her husband are at Coningsby, he is on maintenance and she was on air traffic but has just finished due to pregnancy.

I remain convinced the euro fighter must be very simple to fly on account of a friend who flies them. Singly the worst driver I’ve seen on the road. Surprised me he can walk in a straight line

The captain of an oil survey ship I worked on started out his nautical career on North Sea trawlers, aged 14. At the age of 60 he was eventually ‘let go’ when our company was taken over by Schlumberger, and it turned out he had no papers, nothing, to prove he was a captain…..

He did show us a really good old video, Distant Grounds, I think it was called, about the rise and fall of the North Sea fishing industry.
