I simply CANNOT bring myself to watch a film that in the early 80s was considered virtually a porno by my compadres.

I know how lame the shower scene will be to my grumpy, wizened old mind.

Not sure if it is true or not, but I did hear that Sly Stallone went off to Canada to teach PE in a girls school to avoid the draft for Vietnam.

I'm glad someone mentioned Audie Murphy. I used to watch his westerns on Saturday morning TV. Not a bad actor, but his war record - wow. Such a shame he died so young in a plane crash.

We are big film fans in our house, but I guess my all time favourite would be Jason and the Argonauts. There's a charm to stop frame animation that CGI lacks and it's a film you can watch with your kids again and again.

We did see Terminator Genysis last week. Almost gave it a miss due to the bad reviews but actually it's quite entertaining. Not a patch on 1 and 2 obviously, but if you give up trying to keep track of the story and just enjoy the action, it's good. First half is better really, as Arnie fights himself, which is cool. Can't decide if it's a close body double (probably) or very good CGI and old footage.

If you like modern comedies (ie. Swearing and a bit rude - though aren't they all now?) Bridesmaids and The Heat are both very funny.

Love the scene on 'Blazing Saddles' where he shows him his gun hand. Can't believe I forgot 'Young Frankenstein'. Marty Feldman made that film truly great, IMHO.

A couple of good originals in black and white - The Wages of fear and The Manchurian Candidate. As often happens, the remakes were rubbish.

I think my personal top of the list in that regard is 'The Time Machine'. Not bad enough that they trash a classic story, but they even have it taking place on a different continent.

The recent remakes of Judge Dredd and RoboCop were pants too, and the Total Recall 'reboot' wasn't much better.

At least with the remake of Dredd he kept his helmet on throughout the film, did he not? Stallone cocked his film up as soon as he removed his helmet. In all the years of reading 2000A.D, never once saw Dredd without his helmet. He was just a rugged chin with a helmet atop it.

The worst example of let down sequels, IMHO, is 'The Matrix'. That would have been far better if they'd just left it at one film. Other ones are the 'Highlander' sequels, 'Star Wars' prequels etc.

I've managed to convince myself there never was any sequels to Matrix, Highlander & Starwars trilogy, much better that way

Try and get hold of the "De-specialised" versions of the Starwars trilogy off the internet, they've reconstructed the original movie releases in HD rather than the c**p George Lucas re-mastered versions and yes Han Solo shoots first

That reminds me, has anyone seen Prometheus? Did you understand it?

What's to understand it's a rubbish movie with idiots behaving stupidly.

Now a really good movie that has seems to have slipped under everybody's radar is Mesrine (2008) a pair of films about the life and exploits of France's "Public Enemy No1" possibly there best career criminal, well worth a watch

Great old films ?

"The ipcress file" , great spy flick with Michael Caine, and a great theme tune. (full film on youtube)

"I'm alright Jack" comedy with Peter Sellers as a union shop steward in an engineering factory, if you have ever worked somewhere heavily unionised, you'll be nodding your head watching it. (full film on youtube)

"The third man", fantastic film with Orson Welles before he turned into a blimp.

"Kes", a very raw film with a sad ending, its almost documentary like, the way its made.

"lawrence of arabia"

"A matter of life and death" David Niven as a raf pilot come back from the dead.

"Saturday night and sunday morning", angry young man film from the 60's, incidentally made at the raleigh factory in Nottingham.

"A clockwork orange", needs no introduction, great film, great music.

"On the waterfront" , great film with Marlon brando (his best maybe ?)

"12 angry men", fantastic film, with a great cast.

"L.A Confidential" , not an old film but set in the 50's and very film noir.

"Dr Strangelove" Peter Sellers again, great flick.

"Citizen kane", some say the best film ever made, i dunno.

"Cool hand Luke" Paul Newman in a rural prison, and he isn't giving in.

"The French connection" Gene Hackman is cop popeye doyle, great film with a great car chase.

Don't think they have been mentioned but the Indiana Jones Trilogy and The Usual Suspects should pass a few hours

Probably 'the best' because of Wells' innovation of film techniques, that we take for granted today.

' The Player' is on this week, one of Robbin's and Altman's best.
