Rate my testplate

Here are some pics of my testing material. One plate of about 20mm thickness and 2 scrap pieces of 8mm.
On the plate i began with esab es 43.32 3,2mmx400mm (6013) on DCEP as label says. running at about 120 amps +/- Fig 1

In Fig 2 i tried to do the same with my 2.5mm rods. Also 6013.
So i switched polarity and off it went.
I used Oerlikon Overcord and Böhler Phönix blau.

With the esab rods the slag was self peeling
I ran the 2.5s with +/- 80-90 amps
I tried to work on my rod position and played with arc length.


Now i am curious what you think...

How thick is that bit of metal ????

Get some 3 or 4 mm to practice on, that thick bits a waste.

Well, consistentish bead, try scribing a straight line, and work on consistent speed of travel, good start.

And clean it to shiney metal.

Otherwise good.

Now try gluing bits together.

Good start - plate too thick.

With a thinner bit of plate - you could/will get some penatration - then try lapping the beads against the last one (for practice of welding things together and too each other).

All in all - a good start thou!

you can use a chalk line or a shallow mark across with a cutting disc also is running off take a cutting disc and straghten the last run before the next bead
think of it like a farmer ploughing
you only follow your last bead

Hello to the comunity...
Yesterday i got illuminated!!!

After struggeling for a long time with 6013 in fillet welds......now i got it down!!!

Even with my cheap inverter....now I know how to attack them!!

Here are some pictures....First fillet weld on 5mm plate, then Square tube 2mm wall to plate.....

I know..they are not the pettiest....it was just a quick passage after i read how to do it on www......

no worm holes and almost no slag inclusion!!!

I am super happy now!! On weekend more practise

Improving, good stuff.

Square tube to plate looks a little bit cold, try some more amps.

Try lapping the rod, going up the side, then back to the base and repeat.

Excellent, nice welds, I have no criticism, you should be happy with them.

get a wee chisel and remove the spatter ,its like an explosion in a ball bearing factory , inspector would go mental ! getting better keep at it ! try overhead , spatter falls off easier

The last I care is about the spatter....You are right, if it comes to inspection, spatter is a fault.
But hey...I was so excited how it all went, that I did not take the time to remove the spatter...I am honest with you now....
And in my case it´s only about the beauty....

Rod: 6013 Böhler Phönix Blau 2,5 mm or 3/32
Welding with about 78 amps DCEN meaning that the stick is on negative....I know 6013 is not the best choise, but nothing else in stock
right now....
As this was my first try....not the prettiest with some inclusions....see yourself

you need to pause in the middle and get a little shelf move left pause a moment move right pause a moment move up to the middle again like a triangle fashion and repeat
dont go too wide say 8mm, let it cool down,! then next pass on top of previous one can be a side to side motion progressing upward pausing at the sides again it gives fusion and fills undercutting limit weave to say 10mm ,on thicker larger welds use multiple passes and limit
weave to 2.5 times od of rod
try 84 amps and dont remove the slag apart from the restart area till weld is complete as it keeps spatter off the weld , start by dragging down about 10mm above the finish of last rod , no hurry as the little weld will be burnt out when you proceed up , come straght down to the wider part of the finished rod and sweep across and pick up your motion
get comfy and dont rush it just metronome like fashion 123 123
you are now in the zone

there is a technique called blocking
using large rods which can produce large fillets v up i n 1 pass but its realy for heavy plate , master the weave first

Fair play, I just can't manage to do vertical up with 6013's.

definately some better 6013 rods than others for vertical up,
when i was at collage doing welding half the week, i was working at a shipyard the rest of the time,
I couldnt for the life of me do a decent vert up at collage, but at work was able to do a pretty decent one!
Both were lincoln 6013 rods, but at work we used Pantafix at 30 odd quid a box, and at collage it was likely just the cheapest ones, massive difference in how they ran!
