I can understand not using poison if you keep chickens, although if used correctly it shouldn't cause a problem.

I'd avoid using poison unless as a last resort, IIRC the law was changed recently and as I understand it many poisons which used to be popular shouldn't be sold to the public anymore, but are still in stores because the shops don't comply or haven't learned of the new legislation. Even big box pest controllers frequently get things wrong with poison. I follow some professional pest controllers on Facebook, and it comes up in discussions frequently.

I’ve been shooting rats at a local farm once or twice a week for the last nine years ! Anywhere there is animal food you will find rats, at the farm stables the horse food was stored in plastic dustbins and the rats eat through the bins !
In the chicken pen I wait until dark and use an air rifle with night vision and usually get from ten to over thirty, it’s never ending but regular visits keep the numbers under control.

Do you setup a bait station in a good shooting location or do you just shoot them where they happen to be. Apparently chocolate spread and peanut butter works well for bait as they can't just pick it up and run of, so whilst their licking away you have time to take the shot.

Rats will eat anything but the best baits are what they normally feed on, in the chicken pen it’s the same feeder as in the
OP photo and the rats help themselves but I’ve learned where the rat ‘hot spots’ are around the farm and bait with a couple of handfuls of corn. Unless in an enclosed area like a loft poison isn’t practical, obviously you don’t want the chickens eating it but other wild birds and even hedge hogs can be poisioned.

if you cement holes up they dig it back out. shot broken glass in the mix and they don't if the holes are away from buildings just flood the holes with propane and oxygen. shove some wire wool in the hole prod a couple of leads in it stand back and connect to a battery job done

I'd be real careful doing that

lol we know what happens that's why I said do it with wire wool and long leads and a battery and stand back I bet his missus was none 2 happy . still look on the bright side no more vermin
