£300 thats a **** take isnt it for a couple of hours work and fifty quid for gear

So without sounding a complete twit how is single phase achieved?

Single phase just means you have a domestic power supply. Each live wire is a phase. Power stations create 3 phases of AC, which go into many commercial properties as 3 live wires, 1 neutral, and an earth. Also, (but irrelevant to this) houses on a street will usually be fed from different live wires (or phases), that's why some people may still have power when others have a power cut.

I'm no sparky either but those who are have already advised on what can be done.

I have 2x Clarke 150l 3hp 14cfm, and I'm only happy sand blasting at a decent speed when I have both running.

If I could buy again, I'd be looking for a larger cfm, possibly a diesel generator / compressor, the type used for roadworks or sandblasting buildings.

if all your interested in is doing the odd bonnet or panel just get a 14cfm 3hp that will run from a 13amp socket and buy a D/A that doesn't have a large air demand you can get a 14cfm compressor without spending a fortune, not point using a sledgehammer to crack a walnut

That does make good sense as I could never understand how anyone bothered to blast . I thought my compressor was big enough at 150 but it proved not to be after buying 4 different guns and 1/2 inch pipe and fitting etc etc.

The DA was fine though!

its not 150 litres that counts its the cfm, with the correct cfm you could remove the receiver and it would run your tools fine

been realistic 2- 14cfm comps will run a pot at 90psi using a 3mm jet with a bit to spare at a reasonable rate of cleaning . anything less and its slow and hit and miss .if your doing wheels ect and bigger stuff a 90cfm comp using a 6mm jet is about the minimum if u wanted to do them for proffit

Yeah, this is still only acceptable on hobby scale.

I run 1 compressor to the pressure pot, and 1 compressor to the nozzle. I use a Clarke SB3 http://www.machinemart.co.uk/shop/product/details/sb3-gritblast-gun with pressure pot feeding in place of the reservoir. The other air line in the usual place under the handle. Feed to handle inlet is less than that to Pressure pot.


What is your intended blast setup? A bonnet is too big for most affordable blast cabinets.

Basically I'm restoring an old fiesta rs turbo so its be nice too run only one tool at a time but effectively...

But a spot blaster would be very handy, a da if poss and all associated hand tools with a view to being able to get her up to etch prime stage..

Like i say just looking to get the best possible to do this and maybe others in the future as i miss using my skill as a panel beater and would love too go it as a small buisness or use her as an advert to get back into the trade.

I see a lot of people quoting piston displacement cfm which is misleading. A 3hp comp is under 10cfm free air delivery, and free air delivery is what tools are rated for. To the op, I have the sealey comp you were talking about albeit with the 100ltr tank, it won't run a da 100% all of the time but will do the job but comp will be running constant and from what I have seen body shops have switched to electric da's, much quieter and I would say more efficient. Also it struggles to run the da with it flat on the panel so you I used to angle it so really your just using the edge of the sanding pad which isn't ideal. What I would say is I have overworked the comp on many occasions and has proved very reliable in the 8 or so years I've owned it, probably jinxed myself now! Would buy another sealey but next time would go for something with a lot more cfm but that's coz circumstances have changed along with my needs.

I agree with the electric DA much cheaper to run, if your Da struggles then you have an air flow issue not a problem with the compressor ie restrictive regulator or airline, even the DA

Many thanks for the input.. i know your pain im sick of reading cfm, i want free air figures but it strikes me 3phase is the only hope for PROPER air supply

Trouble is id rent a built too suit unit that has 3ph but its a £1500 deposit, £300pcm + utility's/rates............................................

I'm only messing its going to be done proper, was just good to learn something new as ive always been stand off-ish towards household supply, ive no fear with vehicles lol.

is there any way i can purchase all i need,assemble, then let a spark connect and sign off?..is that legal to do?

You can do that but some can be funny about makes/types e.g some DIY "shed" gear
The spark will buy at trade price & add percentage which will probably work out the same
Ask if you can do the "donkey work" for him?

No id be going to a decent electrical supplies store, we've a couple local who are very helpful so i may pop up and run my plan by them see what they recommend.

Anyways i really do appreciate everyones advice thus far, has given me real confidence that i can achieve the supply i need too get the gear i desire so many many thanks all..

You see this is the thing with electrics now days - officially you can barely change a light bulb without needing to get a electrician in.

Now is it actually illegal to put a new ring in?

Or is it just a fact that there may be insurance issues if the house burnt down and it was found to be your fault?
