rear brake adjuster identification

i have an old rohill recovery truck with the small trailer style rear wheels/brakes it has caravan/trailer axles which I think are knott-avonride.

the knurled part on the brake shoes adjusters has rusted smooth so I need to get some new ones. ive tried asking avonride and they are just trying to sell me new axles which is not going to happen.

these are the offending adjusters, I ground the weld off the knurled round bit and turned it round. and tried to hacksaw new knurley bits on the adjuster part but when assembled it just slips which backs the brake shoes off.

a bit of google image searching has me thinking they may be fiesta items but ive never really worked on FWD fords so though I might see if anyone on here was a blue oval man. although they could also be Austin/rover as I found some guy who said he fitted maestro rear shoes to his one but I know even less about old rover stuff.

has anyone any ideas before I splash £30 on some fiesta ones just to have a look if they are the same.

I've done a few Ford rear brakes various models and none of them looked like that.

The ford ones are a similar design but are a different shape. plus the ford ones are alot smaller. Fiesta/puma drums are 180mm and the focus ones are 203, which makes the adjusters less than 100mm on the smaller ones

it looks like an old ducato from the cab, but I suspect the axles may be from a different source, there was a fad for getting the fiat/peugeot vans in and cutting the chassis behind the cab to make a new one. alot of campervans were made this way. i cant remember where the axles were sourced from in the case of the campers.

you could try LDV or Transit. the braking shoe arangement dosent realt matter whether is front or rear drive. the drum itself woud be the only difference.

While typing it could be along the lines of capri, but its been a while since I had the drums of mine. I'll go and look it up though

EDIT:

just cheched and the 3 litre shoes on the capri are 2.2 inches wide. Yours look al little wider than that so it could be a transit if they are Ford

What size are the drums? can you put up a post of the shoes and or brake arangement?
Are you sure they are trailer axles? trailer axles have auto reverse brakes on them. you'll not use them on a truck

its one of the ones where they chop the cab off and remake the rear part so the frame of the bed becomes the rear chassis to keep the weight down and get the bed lower.
the rear axles are full length trailer/caravan axles. the ones with the rubber inside the cross beam and the trailing arm twists the rubber bush to provide the 'suspension'. the drums measure up as 8" or 203mm.

its actually on a movano cab but that makes no real difference as the back is 'universal fitment'.

Britpart (I shudder when i say that word, but they are the only ones i know of that supply these) do supply new snail cam adjusters for the drum brakes on land rovers. From memory, its not the most expensive kit, but i wonder if it could be adapted for your application here? They are similar, but not quite the same, but could work

As a warning, Britpart are not always renowned for great quality, but if you have a bit of engineering skill (which most on here do) you can adapt most things made of metal to work!

If the adjustment is backing off it's because the spring is not pulling the quadrant up to the post. Is the slot in the back plate letting the pin move enough or is the spring weak ?

I would have thought the back plate with associated hydraulic cylinder and shoes is probably not a trailer item, most probably something they found that fitted the suspension unit and worked with their drum diameter. Identification may be possible using the slave cylinder casting number , knowing the drum diameter and shoe width. If it was mine I would find a disc that dropped over the wheel studs and make a bracket to accommodate a brake caliper with a handbrake.

after some wire brushing no part numbers were seen.

ive bit the bullet and bought a single set of ford focus ones off ebay £32 just to see if they are the same.they come with shoes/cylinders/adjusters/springs/clips.
it occurred to me that if the adjusters are totally different in shape but the knurled wheel and knurled swingy cam think are the same then I can just swap them onto my adjuster plates.

A lot of the campers use Alko axles on the rear, especially the tag axle ones, never seen one apart though to know what they look like.

i ended up buying new axles as the rubber 'suspension' in mine were seized solid. then i removed the trailer brake backing plates and fitted ford fiesta ones as the shoes/ drums are the same size.

from what i remember i found out that these were some old british leyland/ old rover stuff so i might be worth asking on some of the forums/facebook pages for those cars.

fiesta/escort/rover 200 wheel cylinders fit the rohill backing plates, and with some grinding i got the ford shoes to work with the rohill backing plates and adjusters.

mine is wicked now, locks all 4 wheels on the handbrake.

i have some brand new drums spare that fit the rohill axles if you need some new drums too.

ok did you, sounds good! I had too replace my rear axle as it cracked on OSR arm probably due too seizing like yours whilst laden, didn’t have much give in it and used too bounce a bit whilst unladen!

By any chance have you kept hold of any working Rohill brake adjusters? My mate who stripped mine down has lost 1x adjuster which is stopping me from completing it back together! I will pay as can’t source any…

otherwise I may well follow your path and have another axle made up and go down the Ford Fiesta brake route.
