Recommend me a compressor.

What i need one for is spraying car bodywork, air tools inc impact wrenches for tough bolts/wheel bolts etc. I also need it for a 10metre length air pipe too. Also not too heavy and belt driven.

My old cheap nutool pile of rubbish is blowing out the inlet and now wont hold any pressure apart from 10 or so psi. It did have the euro type fitment socket, of which i have changed to the usual type plug outlet fitments recently. I also tightened all the bolts etc and no joy.

Im not too sure about buying a second hand one because time is short for me at the moment for what i need it for.

I use the wolf one at the bottom for a big tank it is very movable as its on wheels I've had no problems so far and I'm using it as much as I can as it's only got 12 months warranty

Take the head off your Nutool and look at the reed valve, it sounds like it may be kaput and you can get replacements.

Take the head off your Nutool and look at the reed valve, it sounds like it may be kaput and you can get replacements.

I did think about trying to mend it, it's just iv never messed about with a compressor before. It's a direct drive machine and when you say take it's head off, do you mean the piston machine part of it or the hole lot of the receiver ?

Im not sure if i can get replacement parts for it anymore, it about 5 years old and not a very good make from what iv read.

Is the reed valve around the inlet area or around the piston area ?

the head is the part that the delivery pipe attaches to and it has reed valves which may just need a clean to stop air coming fron the intake its very easy to do

Ok cool ill give that a try later on and report back, i will eventually get another compressor but if i can fix this one now would be a better for me right now.

This compressor has never had a filter on it, do you suggest i make one for it with something ? It maybe just dust/vapour etc has got inside it.

Iv taken the head off and took some pictures. They were taken before i cleaned it up then tried it again. This time it went to about 28psi and that was the maximum it gets to now instead of about ten last time.

It's a 116psi/8bar/7cfm/1.5 hr model.

Shall i spray some wd40 type substance or any other suggestions on how is the best way to clean the head?

I used a nylon brush and after it was cleaned it look quite dirty, before it did look fairly clean by eye. There is a black stain spot on the piston under where the air goes into the receiver pipe. Is it the hole in the head nearest the pipe hole, it seems to be half open ?

It's not loosing any pressure or has any leaks and i still dont know where it takes the air from to fill it up ?

It also doesn't switch off when i lower the set pressure rating by dial, it says in the instruction manual it could be the breakage of the pressure switch and an engineer is needed to sort it out.

I think the valve is sticking and the air is going in and out at the same time.

Any thoughts or experiences ?

Thats an oil free type compressor. It could be a worn piston/seal assembly.

Is there any way of testing the seal or what i should be looking for to see if it's worn out ?

I did notice when the piston was moving up and down the piston itself 2was at an angle and not flat and true the way it should be, unless this is normal for an oil free compressor ?

Yes, thats normal. The piston is fixed to the connecting rod so it rocks in the bore.
Unless you have dimensional data for the piston seal and bore there is no way to know if it's worn beyond service limits. The bore does seem to have some wear from the pix though.The intake valve is in the piston as can be seen. Just looking at the first pic though, at the top exhaust outlet, it looks like there is a piece of the valve reed broken off. If thats the case it could be the problem.

Yes the bit that looks like a fork, i found a little bit of something thats the same colour around the seal and just blew it of thinking its dust or something. I take it i need a new head and get a new seal/bore as part of its service ?
