Recommend me a lawn mower!

we have a Viking one, briggs petrol engine, pretty solid, no complaints.. not cheap, but 5 years on, no drama, cut grass, clean well, store, repeat.

mind you I do take the time to clean it really well every time I've used it, blast out with compressed air. Wet grass sitting, just rots them out. Convinced that the cleaning make the difference to the longevity, only 10 minutes more, but definitely worth it. Same way, always run the engine dry last cut of the year.. dry stored.

yes its better to do this but if you have fuel in it just make sure its lower than half way start of the season top up with new fuel to the top shake it to mix the old fuel with the new it will revive it

I like the husqvarna ones, the one I had was very reliable until I tried to cut a tree stump with it. Ripped the engine off the deck !

Heres mine, but they dont actually eat that much grass. Not sure about the burglars I have german shepards for that, but they are good fox guards

Well I ended up sort of going against the advice given and bought a mountfield HP454 from b&q for £198.

Basically the lightest hand propelled one they did. I hoped it had a Honda engine in it but It doesn't look like it.

However it seems to have good reviews, was a good price and have spares available so we will see

The cows are just very small ones, so the grass looks long.

As said, you should really look after a mower if you want it to last.

Take mine for instance, they only get fed tesco regular unleaded...

Winter storage is a case of leaving them somewhere in the garden - occasionally they have a bit of 'cover' if they happen to end up somewhere near a bush or the like. (Storage in season - they get left locked into an open trailer, or shoved round the back if I need to cut the grass at home or use the trailer for other things).

Prep for winter consists of turning them off.

Spring prep involves checking if there's oil in there.

If there's petrol left in from last year, it stays in - more than about 1/4 tank I don't bother topping up until it needs more.

I'm on my 5th year with the small one, and 3rd year with a bigger one. I think I've changed the oil maybe twice in each. Other servicing includes flipping them on their sides to pressure wash underneath.

Oil, now you have hit the nail on the head there, I guess after twenty odd years I better check that absolutely definately did when I bought it,but now you mention it will get on that this year....must have some as it doesnt knock yet.

Thanks to this thread, I am now the proud owner of a Honda 536c petrol mower (£100)

Now I need a petrol hedge cutter...
