depends on what companies practice with ppe

many want to supply you with the paper masks and class that as adequate protection

that ranges from building companys right up to grinding metal a paper mask is classed as adequate

you want to argue it your down the road

if you want a better one and they do exist nowadays at 20-30.00 not many companies will pay for them

certain masks dont agree with there users glasses wearers

paper masks steam glasses up but thats not taken into account same in most jobs out there for glasses wearers as they do break the seal on other types of masks

its been the same for 40 years of my life

you refuse the paper mask they supply your sacked and down the road you go

its been the same throughout the building trade and your in a dusty enviroment as bad as as fitting loft insulation

same with goverment training schemes paper mask ppe was all they supplied so not just companies that are at fault

that includes someones company on here as well

Thankfully the question of fume is under the spotlight......For years the "official" fume advice was that the fumes werent toxic / carcinogenic but should be avoided. Personally I used to tell people the official line but add that I wouldnt breathe them in if I could avoid it. Chromium 6 started to become an issue but for a long while it was mentioned that it had only ever affected a cat......
The management of many firms have played lip service to the issue of fumes for long enough........and many still think that an air fed helmet is enough............I havent been in a fab shop for years but often you could see the fume in the shafts of light and often it would be hanging about like a cloud half way up from the floor........it was obvious that wasnt good for you

People used to get squiffy about Innershield and its Barium content.....I dont recall how Barium suddenly became the major topic......but if used correctly Innershield can be one of the cleanest methods...you can use fume on torch extraction and exhaust it away from the area and/or through filters........do the same with gas shielded and you get porosity or brittle welds....and stick welding makes it impossible to follow...........Theres also the myth that TIG does not fume.....maybe its minimal but it has to...and theres ozone.
