Relocating a home workshop?

Do you know someone or somewhere you can store a container? Move all the machinery there piecemeal if you're restricted on access. If you've got space at the new place you might be able to get someone to pick up the container full and drop it off. If not it's just rinse and repeat.

I suspect you'd be able to buy and sell a container for almost no loss these days so it's just down to whether you can store it somewhere.

Might be worth shopping around local independent Hiab Transport guys.
At last job I used to use a local (must be on @DAPPH doorstep I think) for moving big gensets, tanks, pallets of cables etc.
Not only do they have 7.5t stuff, but also a short tractor unit with an 8t Hiab on & a very short trailer option (or used without a trailer in a crane role to get in somewhere tight for lifting & shifting), plus they shared a big yard on an industrial estate - so they'd short-term leave stuff in the yard for us.
(often being able to store stuff was very handy for them, as they'd often come & load up at our work yard in advance when they had a driver & truck going spare, then drop it in their yard. It gave them a lot more hours then to get the load delivered & sited on the day required).

You might get lucky & find similar (or part of the solution, while they'll likely have contacts to help with the storage etc)

I rented 1000 sq foot of space in a barn on a local farm so was able to dismantle the old workshops over several weeks and set up the new shop in relative ease.

Still a stressy time, in my case it took eight (I think) hi-ab flat bed loads and halfway through the process the poor chap who was doing it for me fell off the lorry and ruptured his spleen so I had to change horses, a disaster that I found out about in the middle of my daughters wedding

Don't sell.
The market is very poor at the moment and I feel it would be more stress full as I will guarantee you will get time wasters and still be left with something.
My friend moved to Ireland, bought two containers slowly filled them then got them moved to his new location.
I would ask the buyer if the house goes through then the work shop will be vacated two weeks later?
We are hoping to move soon but have made a start in the loft by packing everything in to Tote boxes, very strong cheap used ones aplenty, securely fastened with a cable tie making them easy to move. Even used them to post a Vice and an Engine.
Loads on Market place we pay around £6 each

Seem to recall a big frigo /freight company on the A1 at Colsterworth Lincs that might have all you need as they used to sell shipping containers & fridge bodies as well .

I might sit with the exact same problem soon.

My plan is to buy a container and rent a piece of land from a farmer where I can keep the container for a few months. Alternatively, just rent a container for a few months.

Our ideal next place will have an acre of land as the absolute minium so if I buy a container it can be relocated to the new place.

Theres two places both in effect bordering my drive forsale now, with land and out buildings….only issue is the price. One has 30 acres, the other 11.

Ask the seller of the new property if you can have access to the workshop on exchange, that could give you a week or two head start on the heavy lifting.

Seconded, I did this when we moved. Although the previous owner took it upon himself to try to unload some of my stuff and dropped my lathe on its end

I wonder if you could find somewhere similar to temporarily store the contents of the workshop for not a lot of money?

We would LOVE an 11 or 30-acre place.

However, that is NOT going to happen in the Wiltshire area unless we get lucky on the Lotto

Best I can hope for is probably 2 acres.

Prices seem to depend on quantity, and quality….25 of the 30 acres are listed as a separate lot at 6000 per acre, its grade 4 permanent pasture. Ive twice tried to buy 6 of the 11 acres firstly from the last owner and recently from the current one. It only really has access for us or our neighbour, as our drive runs through the middle of the 11 acre, 6 k per acre was turned down.

Our grandsons other grandparents have just bought about 100 acre extra, mostly grade 3 at about 7500/ acre. You want good crop land be 10 grand an acre.

A friend has just bought 2.7 acre field and paid 27k with a claw back if he ever gets planning.

I've moved a few lathes, mills and a surface grinder with some homemade skates

I've been trying to decide what to do with the skate used for the J&S surface grinder, it's only any good for smooth surfaces. It's heavy but your welcome to it if it helps

But really need the storage location to have an FLT, or to get a specific container in the yard that would allow me to line the trailer and pickup dead straight in front of it.

Haven't been able to get either of those round here despite some shopping around, hence figuring pallet storage as the best option short term.

I will PM you about that skate, I often use pipe rollers or "proper" skates, but one large skate would make some of these moves a lot easier.

Oh yeah, there's quite a few nifty bits of kit like that, and (alarmingly) stair climbing equipment for very heavy loads.

My issue isn't so much the moving of the equipment in a general sense, but the logistics of making it happen seven times in a row, either fast (when machine moving is best done in a thoughtful and considered way), or doing it in advance and committing to between 8 and 14 machine moves.
