I stripped one beam on a ceiling at home with paint stripper , never again. A guy that does a bit of grit blasting for me does a lot of oak framed barns but they are at the construction stage and not lived in, cant see how you could contain the mess using this method unless one of the recirc jobbies could do it.

What was the outcome of the paint stripper? I’m planning on just doing a select few in the house and the ones that are rough obviously can’t be done by scraping and sanding so I was thinking about using paint stripper on them in the future.

It was a nightmare Phil, the paint stripper works well but it needs to be wire brushed off to get the paint out of the grain. Wire brushing paint stripper overhead = flicking spiteful gook all over the place including you

Like they have been painted about 5 different colours in the past but were poorly sanded back to wood.
The wood is soft, I don’t think it’s oak and it’s had woodworm in. I’ve sanded it back and some of it splinters away if I scrape my fingernails over it.
Is that just from woodworm or something else? I plan on brushing it with a stiff brush to get any more loose stuff off then using the same Osmo polyx oil on them.
I remember a while back hearing about a treatment that makes rotted wood go rock hard (could have been acetone I can’t remember). Worth using something like this before oiling?

Those beams were a nightmare to do today. Crunched up underneath them with the sanding pad constantly falling off the ROS (don’t buy them from b&q), with a ton of dust in my eyes ears and mouth for a few hours.
Got too late to stain them, don’t think the mrs would be too happy smelling that all night..
