Removing timing belt idler and tensioner studs

Bit off what you are asking but have you heard of splitting the old timing belt along the middle with a utility knife? Remove outer half of old belt, slip new one partly on cut off other half of timing belt and slip new one on. Saves timing. I did this on a Toyota Avensis.

I hope it's just the angle of the photo, that waterpump doesn't look meshed to me - if it isn't. it'll sort itself out but there will be reduced tension...

If it isnt meshed correctly and there’s reduced tension, then the tensioner indicator will not be in the correct position ….this would show up when the engine is turned over by spanner….

Assuming it was and the slow rotational speed was enough for the issue to resolve itself - if indeed there was an issue and it's not just a trick of the angle & light.

Didn't notice at the time, turned over a few times by hand. Tensioner sitting where it should be. It has 60 miles done today so guessing all ok.

Belt's about 6' long too!

Even though it looks hard it's one of the easiest to do, once the crank pulley is off.

Set everything to the timing marks, lock the 2 rh pulleys together with vice grips, loosen the tensioner & fit the belt. With practice it can be done in 30 min! Compare that to my FWD van that takes nearly 2 hours!

Handy to know as my mate has an Impreza lump in his T25 VW van...
