Repairing or scrapping my car

I saw an Alfa many years ago that had sills that said Firestone on the inside. Made from tractor inner tubes . The noise when tapped was a bit of a giveaway...

A guy I worked with in the late 60's turned up with a tidy Austin Cambridge he had bought the previous evening. As we all gazed in wonderment one of the lads spotted a slight bubble in the sill on one side .Further poking exposed the sill was full of newspaper and skimmed over with f/glass. What made it even funnier was that it was the previous weeks local rag.

Back in the day I had been known to spread filler or better still the filler with chopped strand fiberglass in it, onto a page from the Ex & M, then invert so paper side out and place over the offending hole, sand paper off when set and apply more to shape!

Nah I'll be selling this car once it passes an MOT, I got too many cars right now (4 total). I hope to still be driving my Saab 900 in 2032.

Somewhere on YouTube is a video of a guy who drove a Toyota Yaris from home in the West Midlands to the Nordkapp, the most northerly point on the European mainland that you can drive to.

Iirc it was an older model with a 1 litre 3 cylinder engine but it did the 5000-odd miles round trip and never missed a beat! Nordkapp is on my bucket list but I'll do it a bit more civilised in my Transit camper, comfort is a priority for me these days.

And I wouldn't mind recreating the opening scenes of the Italian Job either, one of these fine days, but in a proper wagon. Something along the lines of a tag axle 143 Scania with a 450 horse V8, 12 speed manual transmission, and vertical exhaust stacks. Wheeling that along the Great St Bernard Pass while listening to the great Matt Monroe on the 8 track would be a fine road trip!

pre covid we drove the defender camper to the arctic circle and back, 5500 miles, (didnt bother with nordcap as there isnt much to see) only breakdown was the wiper arm fell off in finland, knocked it back on with a hammer,

I once had a car in for service and MOT check, the sills were made from flashbanding, undersealed, they actually looked quite good!

Car I had as an impoverished, yet to learn welding, student last century used to track off to one side, then one night on the way back from London to Yorkshire, it tracked off the other way.

Inspection in daylight the following day revealed the rear inner wing patches said "Castrol GTX" and "Duckhams" under the underseal, revealed as one of them had completely broken away from the rest of the car, allowing the strut to assume a more jaunty angle than standard.

One SIP migmate turbo on special in the new years sale at Huddersfield Halfords and I was on my way to learning to weld . . . Wasn't until I joined here I learnt the welder was crap - did me for 25 years and a lot of car repairing. But I did use rather thicker material than oil cans!

My XJ900 has been there, with the PO and his missus.
Bloody thing went a fair way around the world, too.

Picked a mk1 yaris for my sister as her first car, had it years and only had to replace the exhaust.
Scrapped it with nothing wrong to buy terrible cars she has no end of trouble with.. Fiat 500, audi a1's ect.

Worst case scenario if you mess up you just have to cut it out the mistake and repair it. With a welder and enough time, anything is repairable.

The only exception is people I know who set their cars on fire when welding at them


One went up in a garage but they got the Merc pulled out in time for it to not take the garage with it.

I used to drive a tag axle Scania 142 with a V8 and 12 speed manual box, with one big fat stainless steel Eminox stack. 430 Horses I think it was. C383TLP.
It belonged to a mate and we would often go out double manning - never have I had such a restful sleep with that big old V8 throbbing away under the bunk. Happy memories!

Well I've finally completed the welding, I had to cut off more metal still to get to good stock, but this side went faster and easier. Repairs have been primed and I've coated the underside and inside of the repairs in Dinitrol ML. Time to start reassembling soon. I need to buy more rust protection stuff so I can cover the entire underside of the car. Then it will dry and I will apply bitumen based protection over that. Should help make the ride a little quieter too.

We acquired a Morris Traveller years ago, it had a recent Mot, wife driving it one day going round a right hand bend i noticed the floor flexing under my seat. The central cross member had snapped in half at the torsion bar. A good look found a hall of horrors everywhere, Inner wing had a soft alloy skin & filler that when peeled off revealed Colgate!
The sills had been stuffed full of loft insulation fibreglass & then filled with resin. We did weld it up properly but it took months.
