Replacing an up-and-over garage door

Might be a bit over the top but if security of important, build doors like on a Mobile Mini container (bottom right).

The important bit is the locking system:

The circular silver thing in the hole is the lock itself and attaches to a tab in the arm of the handle, preventing it from moving up. With it in the down position it has three big bolts that slide though the top, bottom and into the other door, moving the handle up once the lock has been removed retracts all the bolts. The only way to get in without the key is to take an angle grinder/plasma cutter/oxy-fuel to it.

Just use some flat to the outside if the doors open in
Mine are double Stanley doors remember that means 4 leafs interconnecting!

Why not make something like that in steel. But clad it in wood for appearance and to deter those who think it must he something valuable... this is built out of block but if you ripped the boards of you would be stuffed....

Got them on the door already, and they're great. I'm not convinced that the door itself is massively secure even with the locks, though - it seems that a pry bar could bend the door pretty easily and pop these locks.

In the local scumbag estate, There's a load of doors that have corners bent up/folded over/plywood bolted on top where some scrote got in before. There's also plenty of doors just not there too.

if you're that worried, i'd brick it up and put a proper door into it, about the same effort and you could get a cheap steel framed door to put in.

My dad years ago had his work shop broken into, he had massive oak doors, heavy hinged, all coach bolts etc, huge padlocks etc, and some pikeys went it through the roof by smashing it in with a concrete block. the nicked everything, even took a large record vice up and out the roof.

If they want to get in and the areas secluded they will. If it's an urban area you're best off not drawing attention to it and put additional locks and plates in etc to slow them down and force them to make noise.

Best advice is to make sure it's all insured.

At our last home I turned our garage into an all signing all dancing office c/w washing machine & a dry we stacked on top of it .

Because our garage was well with in our curtillage & eventually blocked off from the from of the legal pedestrian access to the property by a massive bespoke shed built on 3 mtr H section concrete posts that blocked of all pedestrian access .

I put a pair of high level of pattern & frosting ion both sheets of glass double glazed doors with a small side panel to one side in place of our steel seven foot wide garage up & over door . Both doors were 900 mm , had four anti theft external hinges and plenty of dog bolts as well as a special stainbless steel euro laser keyed lock barrel that if forced would break the barrel off but leave the door solidly locked and still openable with the key
The garage side door was converted into a picture window with reflective glass .

The guys who made the door panels asked if I'd like some galv sheet forms put inside the units to make it look like a solid steel panel . They said that even if some one used an auto dot punch to break the outer glass once the outer pane shattered they'd still be caught out for quite a while by the galv sheet as it was folded at the edges & silicone glues in side the units.
