Replacing MDF in garage racking

I've been using plywood treated with Danish oil because oil is the quickest way I've found to treat wood.

This thread has given me an idea for using up some foot long, home made T&G scaffold board off cuts from when I clad my sliding gate. Pics later if it works!

I can feel some shelves coming on.

Function over form the older I get!

I wonder if you could "treat" chipboard with old engine oil? It'd surely absorb it and I guess waterproof it. Must be a recipe somewhere!

I know back in the day my old man would cut creosote 50/50 with it for the fences.

I used old pallets, stripped down and then nailed together into panels.
I really like the blue colour, too...

OSB. Cheap and deals with damp better than chip and MDF. Ply if your rich or get good discounts at the builders merchants.

I just use whatever offcuts are lying around. As soon as a section of flooring leaves more than 6" of spare, I think of a shelf that's needed. Some shelves are 2x4" edge-butted and tied together with batten. Basically, nothing gets wasted.
My gradual clear-up of the gash that's lying around the workshop continues, with things gradually finding a shelf space.
I might eventually have a tidy 'shop when I'm too old to use it.

I managed to pick up some seconds/damaged kitchen worktops for cheap at Wickes , sturdy stuff and some of it is a bit moisture resistant, scaffold planks also work well and if you nip into a local scaffolders they normally have a pile of split/damaged boards going cheap.
