Reversing 1ph motor

I have this motor and gearbox that i want to be able to switch directions from a switch.

This is the plate with the wiring diag.

And i bought a pendant control.

I now realize This lot is going to need some sort of contactor.



Would i be right in thinking i need a reversing contactor and would it need to be 3 or 4 pole.

You may not need a contactor depending on the motor rating. BTW if you need more of those NO/NC blocks I think I have a bunch of them. Otherwise I might have a 1-2 switch that could do it.

You just need a two pole change over switch wired to the start winding/cap….and ideally with a centre off position.…

To reverse a single phase motor you need to swap the wires over on either the start or run winding but not both.
Easiest way to do it is with a changeover switch with a centre off position. For a small motor like that you don't need a contactor. I have Myford ML7 lathe & a pillar drill done this way.

No, wire X5 is also swapped on the wiring plate drawing. He wants to be able to switch between forwards and reverse, anyway.

Either way it would need to stop between change of direction, pendant looks ideal if you can make it work.

Thanks for the replies.

I want to use the pendant as it's a small ring roller and i might need to be 6m away from it hanging onto the end of a bit of steel.
I thought a reversing contactor would prevent problems if i pushed both buttons at the same time.
Maybe also a lower voltage to the pendant depending on the coil.


So i only need to be switching the link connections and the x5 wire?

I might be wrong but to me X6 would be the common to the pendant and the normally open terminals would go to Z1 and Z2.

Indeed it is, Still an easy job to wire it, though.

If you look at my sketch above, what needs to happen is to reverse the Live and Neutral to the ends of the start winding….This effectively changes the phasing by 180 degrees, to give the change in direction.The terminal box shows the link being moved and also the X5 connection for the cap. Swapping the link and the cap wire does that….it looks like the switches in the pendant are Not latching, so I don’t think they’d be suitable….foto of the front?

The switches don't latch so if I let go or get draged in by a bit of steel it stops

A c/o switch is easiest looking at it, to switch the link and swap the capacitor - though you could do it with with two separate toggle switches (though that would require the operator to be "switched-on" enough to always throw both switches (or even just have a link bar across each switch, so you can't throw one without the other?)

The switches on those don't like a lot of motor current. It says 5A on your pendant, I imagine at least the startup current, if not the run current will be over that? When they get tired, they can stick on, which is unfun. Think a contactor (or two?) Would be a good plan

Do away with the links in the motor box & extend the wires on terminals U1,U2,Z1 & Z2 out to your pendant, plus the L & N feeds ( use some multicore flex, SY type recommended ).

Replace one of the buttons on the pendant with a 2 pole changeover switch with centre off.

Connect the L & N to the other button through 2 NO switches & they feed the changeover switch wired using @Matrixx useful diagram above. (though he did omit to draw in the windings between U1/U2 & Z1/Z2 )

Can't see any other way of doing it if you want to operate it remotely. Check the motor plate but I don't think that motor will exceed 5A, especially with it being geared down.

To do it with low voltage you are into a lot of extra cost & more complicated wiring using transformers, relays/contactors, etc.

Too late now but the ideal way to go would have been a 3 phase motor controlled by a VFD. Gives you low voltage control, easy fwd/rev, slow startup, variable speed & inch button option.

Then things should be fairly straightforward.

Its only single phase so contactors are not needed.

I only showed the terminal's (windings don't affect the connections)
