myfords are simple to move compared to a big old thing take a car and it will fit in compared to trailer and the man power to lift other lathes up

if you think parts for myfords are dear wait till you have to buy the parts that are so selective they command one hell of a price can be nearly 5 times more than a myfords

However at least in Sweden there are some old big lathes (ex industry types) around in people's workshops, but no idea what the situation is like at that front in Finland.

Not as good as in Sweden. Bigger lathes are more common here too. Too big, too expensive, too much for me all in all.

Dennis, whereabouts in Finland are you based? I've spent many a summer and winter in the forests around rovaniemi

I'm located about 25km south of Vaasa which on the western coast.

I also only have a toyota yaris, which can take a trailer hitch though. So the size of things I can move are limited, 400kg per the law.

Ofcourse I don't know how I'd get it down from the trailer, or on the trailer, or into the garage. Disassembly into smaller parts is a solution though.

I've considered looking to Sweden for a blomqvist lathe. Southbend copies IIRC, got a good reputation.

I have the British copy a Smart and Brown Sable, it's a lovely machine, if the Blomqvist is available then you won't be disappointed, it's significantly more powerful and ridged than an ml7.

Also dont write of some of the imported, stuff from the not so popular countries. If used sensibly like a myford needs to be used they produce good results. I had this 80 warco....far better than both the myford ml7s ive had. Produced some really good work with it, before needing woops wanting bigger capacity. It is now in the owner ship of a guy who used it to build s bike that holds a world speed record at boneville.

Quite easily moved by two people a van and an engine hoist.

Looks like a stout machine - might be worth a shot IMO unless you turn up and its completely worn down.

I'd wager that for a hobbyist a reasonable lathe will do most things you'd ever want. I don't think it has to be a Myford or Boxford or whatever to be any good. At the end of the day, they spin an object, and you move a tool to contact the object - it's not exactly rocket science.

Make sure that the change gears are with it, if it's an unusual machine replacement gears will be a pain to find.

I was told it won't be let go for under 1000€ so I just roll my eyes and move on. It's hard to accept prices like that when I get to read about people here buying a hardinge lathe with gearbox and everything for 800£. Heck I think paying for shipping to Finland for that it would've been a good deal.

I'd have that. Looks well built and fairly complete. 16 speeds on the belts and back gear and taper roller spindle bearings by the looks of it.

Wanted to share this. A huge lathe for what seems very little money. Not the first time I've run across lathes like this, they seem more common than the smaller lathes I am looking for and for less money. I can see it's even got a norton gear box, but way too large for my garage shop. Sadly...

Do you know what make that lathe is? It has a similar layout to a lathe I had, although that is more modern, and I was never able to find the make of mine.

Oh, also meant to say the other one you linked to looks to me like it is possibly a Russian built lathe but what make I have no idea, it just has the look of a Russian lathe to me

A russian lathe might be what it is, lots of ussr and east block stuff here, I've often seen TOS branded lathes, iirc it's czech or perhaps romanian.

I found this lathe for 650, pictures are bad so I don't know much about it, more decent price, has been up a while too, no norton style box.

Totally agree, I would much rather buy the other one at €1000 than pay €300 for that one let alone €650.


I am not sure what the prices are for Lathes in Finland but it seems they are quite expensive in comparison to here so maybe the €1000 one is not too bad, assuming of course it is in as good condition as the pics seems to suggest.
