I'm sneeking mine in to the airing cupboard next to the tank missus kicked off when I told her but she will get over ithaving the oilcooled just bang the rod on and it warms up in seconds and away u go

buzzbox not heard that for yonks,inverter sets are a lot better now but duty cycle and inverter type????

7018 and the likes are no problem at all on most inverters
6010 and the likes need the high ocv

Not sure drying rods out actually works that well.

I do have a portable thermostatically controlled oven for hi-lo's.

But when I dry out 6013's they never seem to be any good.

Yes I find 6013 are worse re dried than used as is. I just give them the farmers they use any junk
They are able to handle more moisture than lo hy quite markedly so in fact

Storing rods really well can cost more than chucking them if your not on the ball

hay guys, here in our shop the prev owner is the type to buy a large pack of stick for every job he did and left the last pack alone, and i went trough some of it, and it was packed with all kinds of rods. Red tiny ones, zink rods, and i allso found some massive 7048 rods, but im having a hard time really getting anny information about this rod.
and i think thay are pretty old, that have the white crap covering them, oxidation, thay are fat as *******. like 3/16 or somthing like that
anyone care to spit in som juce on the subjectivius ?
someone said thay just like 7018 :S

A low hydrogen electrode specially designed for vertical down and not much good for anything else, so not just like 7018. Apparently used a lot in ship building, in some places, at some time. I don't think that companies like ESAB and Lincoln make them now.

says it for vertical down position, BUT wouldent flat also be considered ok ? im no master in stickwelding, im doing some repairs on tractor and i found some 7048 rods and i wanned to put some strong fat welds down on it, has some cracs around the lift arm on the front and some structural

There's usually a diagram in the box showing the positions the rod has been designed for.

I wouldn't waste any time messing with them, and certainly not for anything important like that. Specialised things intended for high productivity in a particular application can be a right pain for general purpose use.

Get vac paks of 7018 or 7016, whichever you prefer.

If it needs to be strong then do as suggested and get some 7016/8 which will do the job, or ask @TechnicAl about the 7048 rods - don't just use them with no idea as to their suitability.

Apart from anything else, they appear to have been badly stored and are in a dubious state, which would put me off anything other than having a mess about on some scrap.

Ah yes, I'd forgotten that - I was focusing on the fact their spec is unknown and they could be totally unsuitable. Most rods aren't OK for use on important things after poor storage conditions.

Unless they turn out to be for something special/useful (which I doubt, due to the bad storage) I suggest he uses them for a bead pad. It'll considerably improve his welding and may be the only practical use for them.

I too think "vac pacs" are the way forward.

Of late I think I have thrown more welding rods away than I have used!

They have saved companies like ours a small fortune in electricity bills.It used to be that the welder would go to the electode store and take out a "lose handfull rods" .They would then put into a heated quiver and,if the rods had not been used they would be binned

yea, we have the 7016, and 7024 (old codition, white oxidation on them some rust on the tip even)
think i gotta just get some new ones to compair with. :P packs laying everywhere with all kinds of coating and oxidation on.

Mucking about in the back yard, or experimenting, is one thing; doing work for other people which they are paying for and reasonably expect to be done to a high standard, and where there may be consequences if it fails, is another thing entirely.

I'd be inclined to weigh in all those old rods for scrap and buy in some new ones you can rely on and store them better. I can't believe that the cost of rods is a very big part of most of the jobs you do anyway.

yea i deffinitly agree there, it's more or less messing around on some minor repair here and there. and it made me get in to stick welding.
cant find small packs of the 7018, wich i want, cost like 30 dollars for a big pack and im never relly using sticks for welding. so i might aswell use the desent condition 7016
