yup, this is a concern. i've ordered some of that led/neon type stuff off ebay (5m that can be trimmed in 2.5cm increments). it looks very flexible and suitable, but i know theres quite a fragile strip on led's embedded inside.
If it doesnt work out, i can alway put some opaque white plastic sheet over the back, and just backlight it, but i'd muh prefer the embedded neon look. rekon it will look pretty snazzy.
Also regarding the routing. yes there straight lines, but i saw the tips of each wave as slightly curved, but if i just route straight it will be far easier, and probably not detract from the overall look too much. one way to find out!
also except from the AM in the centre, its also symmetrical, so the hard work should only be for one side i think.

Well there’s 2hr in already.
Used our small camping projector then spent a while making sure everything was bang on measurement wise. Started looking at the router and there’s no way I could use the guide bush. It leaves you blind.
think I’ll sink a 12mm bit into each apex, then use the edge of the circle at each end to straight line across using a fence against the router base.

That's quite a bit bigger than I thought it would be.
I'd be tempted to drill all the ends and use my little bottle trimmer and a tracksaw track to join em up.

Been looking at those recently. Do they lock into the tracksaw tracks?
Ps. that board is about 950mm wide and will likely trim it to about 850 ish

Yeah. Haven't tested mine out yet. Just a 3d printed jobbie. Bought it for those odd times I can't risk a slip.

I helped with a tight wave form on a 4' x 2' sheet of 18mm MDF for an art project, i just cut the shape on one side of another piece of MDFwith a jig saw using a straight edge the refined it with a hole cutters and car body filler till it was perfect then lay it on top of the MDF i wanted to route using a 12mm bit and a 18mm guide bushing, It was filled with resin after in the join and light added from behind

Had to scale it down a fair bit to fit 5m of rope.
practiced a fair bit first, and doing the straights first then free handing the tips worked best. A bit of bodgery, sanding and few coats of an old tin of p88 lurking on the shelf. Time for a satin black top coat.
ps, p88 is a fantastic sealer for mdf. Brilliant for sealing edges too.

Really?
It's just a series of holes, joined by straight lines.
Bore the endpoints first, then use a straight edge and top guided straight bit, to route the lines.
(Insert dowels in the bored holes to set the straight edge, then clamp + remove dowels.
You could set stops to prevent over cutting, the same way.)

I hadn't read the rest of the thread when I replied.
<Edit> if it was A4, I'd be tempted to cut a decal from vinyl, and either stick it to some clear perspex, or even use it to etch a piece of thin copper or steel.
Etched right through it could be filligree, or using a thicker piece (3mm?) It could be used as a template to route out MDF using a Dremel router + guide

Fair old mission with a router regardless of how you do it, it’s got cnc written all over it!
if I was doing more than one though, taking the same time with a template would obviously be a huge advantage.
