Running 3.2s on under 100A

I think that the advice we give, should be based on the 'Correct' way of doing things. Of course its not to say that there arn't other ways that things can be done, especially when considering the application of some of the projects that are being welded.

But I get the impression from some people on here that if someone says something is Black then they will try their damnest to prove that it may be White and the only reason that 'we' are saying its Black is to make money or hoodwink people!

Heres a thread from another forum, have a look at post #5 the guy always poses as welding expert (and hes dished out plenty of bad advice in the past), Imagine the consequences if someone had used that technique to weld a towing eye on a 20ton trailer on that forum its quite possible..

Personally I'm never too proud to take advice, but forums sometimes seem to turn into a schoolyard posing setion...

You will need to read while welding. The current will be much higher with the rod shorted.

I think the point is that you can get something out of a 3.2mm rod by way of butt welds etc. with a 100A buzz box and probably if the rods allow; not that it's a great technique well worth practice to get right, not that you should do it rather than use around 125A which is the often quoted current to aim for for 3.2 6013s. It might be worth remembering if you're stuck.- and not welding trailer eyes.

Having a quick look at the Toolstation welders on their site, they offer a Silverline 100A buzz box and a SIP 95A inverter. With both it's claimed they are capable of using 1.6 to 2.5mm rods and presumably if there was a ghost of a chance of getting away with claiming they could handle 3.2s they'd take it.

From what I've seem the clip type electrode holders with 100A and less welders often won't accept 3.2s anyway.

i shall continued to use my ltlle 100amp hobby wleder and my cheap buzz box until my needs change.
