sand blasting costs
i've just read this thread i'm hoping to have a go blasting
as a business myself,been out of work for 3 years and
about sick.
by the sounds of it those 20 g pressure pots are not
up to constant business use?
i'm thinking of using very large cabinets rather on the
unit floor is this viable to save costs?
soda blasing is an idea too.
any thoughts would be welcomed

hi folks, i have been reading these posts and thought they have been very helpful so i wanted to ask a question myself regarding my hopefully soon to start new blasting and painting business in the scottish highlands.(no other mobile blasting businesses for hundreds of square miles , so i have seen an opportunity without treading on toes)
My main issue is with the pricing as the jobs that are lined up are relatively large(farmyard grain hopper 5x25 square mtrs and a 20ft shipping container) so i am not sure on whether to charge by the sq mtr or per hour etc..
the way i have come to work out the price per hour is, i will be using an expendable media called jblast which is 200 per ton . the compressor and pot are 175cfm and a 1440 pot which holds about 3 bags 75kg of media. running at about 100psi and a 5/16 nozzle . continuous blasting for an hour will use about 6 bags , so thats £35 of grit used , including diesel thats about £40. so to be making it worth my while i will have to charge in excess of £60-65 per hour . or for a job that is 125 square mtrs would you charge something along the lines of £7 per square mtrs which would be £875 .
I hope someone out there can help as it will be my first job and would really like to get it right first time as the client has lots of contacts that if the job is done right ,could potentially generate alot of future work . any info would be GREATLY appreciated

Try and get quotes for someone to come and blast the front of your house, you'll know the area so you'll get an idea of how other people charge. Charging by hour may be best, give the customer an estimate (rather than a quote) to cover yourself for snags.
I've come a cropper on wheels in the past through not knowing how tough modern paints are!
With your figures you're only allowing £20 ph on top of grit & fuel, you've got all your other overheads & expenses, plus wages and you need to allow for the time you're not actually blasting.
Consider using crushed glass at £100 per ton from Stacey's. That works out at £55 per ton for the grit (in bulk bags) plus carriage. They charge carriage at cost and for the size of stuff you're looking at you could order a few tons at a time.

if your going to be doing a fair load in a large shed use chilled iron on containers and rough gear it can be used over and over again. it works out 2 expensive using expendable slag just use that when outside and cant recover it as its not worth using twice because of blockages and inconsistancy in flow. once your gear is set up for grit flow theres no need to keep re adjusting it saving a lot of wasted time
Thanks for that info , dont suppose you know what i would google when looking for staceys online as i havent heard of that company , i have just been dealing with hodge clemco up until now

be very careful regards to and blasting and offering painting ontop. painting (this includes priming etc) for commercial or business use requires planning permission from your local authority (and to get it requires a booth/room that meets alot of requirements especially extraction and filtering of any paint overspray) just check first to be safe
