As drivers can bugger up coupling to a simple pin set up, the scammel coupling was never going to be a success.

Where I worked in the lat 60s, we used to have deliveries by British Rail parcel service by Scarab’s also one of the local coal merchants used one for deliveries

I'm pretty sure Hitchman's Dairy (later to become Unigate, then I thought a Hoilday Inn Express!) in Walthamstow used them too. Ring any bells with you @Seadog ?

Certainly I remember Hitchman's. I don't remember them using the Scarab, though. In my mind they just had tge normal milk floats. I do remember BR Parcel Services Scarabs around the area.

However, the coupling/uncoupling takes several minutes, that self hitch looks neat.

Here is a popular truck around here, for use in large lot's, not on road.
You'll notice the cab door is at the back, driver steps out onto platform to hook up air hoses.
The hitch goes up/down by hydraulics, so the trailer landing gear is left down.

Yes, after I typed it, I realized you have container ports as well, they see allot of use shuttling.

I have not seen them inside a warehouse, I think that's where the scammell worked well.
"Marshalling Yards" is where I see them.

The chicken abattoir in Hereford use a single cab tractor like that as a shunter,unknown make.

We had a few Terburg Shunters at JLR, lorries would drop the trailers off in a holding park and the shunters would move them into loading bays when needed.

That’s what I meant really. The loading bays outside the warehouses, not inside the warehouse proper.

Some of the receiving decks were massive, like 2 tractor/trailer units nose to tail deep by 8 units wide, they even had roller doors that could be closed once the unit had reversed in.

I work on these from the small ones to the big 403 port ones.

Mostly well built, certainly better than the Kalmar's.
