Scratching an itch.....

We have been here for 2 years now and have sorted out the new kitchen, breakfast room, utility room, shower room and garden. So most big jobs now done and time to look at some of the more minor ones.

The house has this nice porch.

The steps and slabs out the front will be a job for next year, this itch is instead the floor inside.

There has been a bit of architectural vandalism going on here so I started to lift the tiles.

That looks like a recess for a boot scraper and red carpet under the floor.

And under the carpet, just what I was expecting.

Unfortunately, it's got some damage.

Will lift the remainder tomorrow unless it's sunny, it's like a greenhouse in there. Then decide if I can save it or replace it.

Looks like Minton tiles, we had those in a house built in 1905

I like old, but the red paint down each side will just irritate you for ever. Screed the original floor and relay the whole area to a similar design.

Or if you dont want tiles you could consider Amtico

As suggested above, I'm likely to screed over and retile in a similar traditional style. I'll make a final decision once all the old tiles are up.

That recess held a coconut fiber door mat.
You come across them a lot in buildings that had a tradesman entrance.

It's the vernacular round here and is original to the house. Here is a pic from a few years after the house was built. Looks like it may have had a pitched roof but tricky too say for sure.

That's a nice find. Along with the diagonal infill on the wall panels that's really sweet. Return to a delicate pitched roof rather than the clumpy flat one, add some nicer paint colours and you'll have a gem.

Will need to have a look in here, there is an old gas pipe the enters the basement in this location.
