pva is supposed to be waterproof but it isn't and when wet re emulsifies SBR is totaly water proof and mixed with cement makes the 1st bonding coat on tanked and damp proofing walls then tanking slurry mixed with sbr

I had a problem with the neighbour's chimney stack on the gaff in France. Water was running down through cracks in the mortar around the steel flue and leaving damp brown (rust) marks on our living room wall. I applied a slurry of cement, water and SBR to the mortar around the flue, then mixed up a bucket of strong mortar with SBR added (ratios as advised on the container) and trowelled it on liberally. Haven't had chance to see if it's fixed the problem yet (Coronavirus stopped play), but I'll be amazed if it hasn't fixed the problem.

but a workshop floor gets more abuse than what this will get. im probably going to put those click together floor tiles down, I think they are called Karndean or something like that, its like laminate floor but fake tiles and not wood. so that stuff will act as a load spreader.

I did the garage and the workshop with these. Very pleased, light grey makes it easier to see dropped bits.

Ive been googling this but its just left me in a totally confused spin. So if someone could advise me what I need then I would be very grateful,

I need to level the floor in my house as ive removed all the old tiles. it seems they stuck the old ceramic floor tiles down over some kind of vinyl floor tiles (Marley tiles??) which have come up and left me with some black bitumen type stuff which isn't sticky and just bare concrete in other places. I need to also fill some damaged bits where I carried away with the hammer and chisel.

and bash it down on top of everything? or will it not work over the bitumen? some people say you need to prime the concrete parts whilst others say to just dampen it down.

ive got about 20 square meters to do.

im guessing I can just mix it in a big yellow bendy bucket.

I used that stuff and thought it was good, make sure you’ve mixed it really well! If you don’t it goes a bit strange when you use it. Also to cover yourself buy double the amount you’ll think you need. I think I ran out half way through which wasn’t a great issue for me because it was really uneven in places. My second batch levelled it perfectly which was nice

Make sure you don’t use PVA before doing it as well. Someone recommended me to do that and it caused me a lot of grief and I ended up have to remove all the pva and then re do it. I can’t remember what I used though.

It would be good practice to use this over the top. It helps level it and get any air bubbles.

ive a screwfix voucher that expires today which will net me 3 bags of 1210 leveller for £20. which should help to offset the cost of the extra stuff I now need.

what kind of consistency do you think this slurry mix should be? milk/cream/custard?? I had planned to spread it on with a poundshop broom.

Use a float to push it around.

Mix. Use the ratio on the bag. Get enough buckets of water measured ready for all your stock and bags open ready.
Mix pour push with float and repeat

I mixed it to consistency of double cream. KimB is spot on about how much to buy. I calculated it at 3 bags but then decided to buy another 2 just in case. In the end the 5 bags was just enough, not a drop less though.

I poured it and the wife pushed it into corners with a window cleaning squeegee attached to a broom handle.

Left it until next day and was totally amazed how nice and flat and solid the floor was. Our first time doing it, think its purely down to it being a great product (mapei from screwfix).

Use there grout a lot. Instarmac gear is also good.

I have layed self leveling compound over the same black stuff having pulled up tiles
Primmed using some funny pink stuff in 2 coats
I think it's all alright been down 8 or 9 months

If you want something that will cover absolutely anything the ardex na with it latex liquid. Not sure if its available to the public but i can get you some through my suppier if you want. The mapei stuff at screwfix is also pretty good. The cheaper stuff is ok for over concrete but the more expensive bag has fibres in it which will be better for going over more soiled surfaces. Fball 1200 is another good product too

If your floor is already level and you just need to refinish it why not simply screed it you'll only need a thin coat

I mixed the screed up with a ratio of 1 part water 1 part SBR and 5 parts cement, but found it was far to thick when I poured it down and it wouldn't brush/spread well at all. I then had to level that out with the mapi 1210 although I found I was a bit short of it so left the bits that would sit under the kitchen base units. once that had dried I mixed up some more SBR mixture 1:1 water/SBR and just put cement in till it was about the same thickness as the levelling compound then trowled it down on the floor. it went on pretty well and I will see what it looks like tomorrow when its dry.

its like you say Snooper, I bet I could have just mixed up some SBR screed to a decent consistency and gone over with that, I know for next time. although pound for pound the 1210 worked out cheaper but I bottled out at the thought of just putting it straight over the old bitumen adhesive as google threw up some good horror stories.
