Another way of looking at what is needed is to contact the HR dept. and ask what is the best route into working there. Be specific on what areas you are interested in. Then you know what skills to look for in in training or apprenticeship's.

Good company to go with in this area from what ive been told, a guy I worked with a little while ago done an apprenticeship with them, CNC machine operating i think he said it was

Is it just me or do the young kids these days want the boses job after five minutes work as a novice

Agree, I was talking to a young guy recently who called himself a joiner, I asked what training he had, 'Oh I've done 2 years at school to become qualified'. I had to laugh to myself, I did a 6year apprenticeship along with day and night school and feel that even when 'qualified' you are always learning.

As soon as the kids recognise that they will be on exponential learning curve that never stops the better. After 20 years of a highly vocational uni qualification I know my game reasonably well but still always learning !

C'mon, I can remember thinking I knew it all at 18, the fact I didn't and still don't dawned on me quickly once I entered my working life. Yes quite! I certainly remember knowing too much "about all the wrong things"- still trying to forget them

Not much subsea welding done as the above posters have said, even above sea is usually prefab on shore and then bolted using flanges.
If you weld in water it cools too quick so is weak therefore habitats are built where needed ( under water shed full of gas) obviously expensive!
Most diver welders are in fact coded welders first and became divers second.
Most divers can weld a bit but not to coded standard.

Enthusiasm is a good thing which is difficult to teach! Good luck !!

I don't think you could call wet stick welding weak, used to train freshly qualified divers to weld topside and underwater

I am not happy to accept that welds done underwater are weak because they cool fast, some of these welds are seriously structural in nature and done with specially designed rods for the purpose. I have seen it demonstrated and the resultant welds look very good
Though I fear I should have to leave the details to somebody who has actually trained in it to qualify the situation, I just aint buying it Johnyev

I perhaps should have used the words "more brittle" then? I'm also about 15 years out of it so perhaps materials etc. have improved.
We did use some very expensive rods on a non structural job which were very easy to use, like melting a candle!.

As an ex Commercial Diver (turned commercial pilot....) I can tell you we rarely did any underwater welding. Lost of cutting but rarely welding. Most stuff is bolted together these days with all the welding done on the surface in very controlled environments. My friend is a subsea engineer and they design it this way to ensure quality control following the many well publicised incidents with all leaks.

We would get the occasional civils jobs where we would need to bodge something together but again majority of work was cutting.
