Setting up new compressor for spraying

I've been reading through all the suggestions given to me and appreciate every bit...

But tell me...to keep things simple, can I not just replace the cheap regulator on my compressor for a better quality one? And then just fit an inline water trap onto my spray gun end???

Or is any regulator on a compressor tank going to be restrictive regards airflow?

i use a half inch filter regulator on my tank and sometimes a water seperator down near the end of the line if im spraying.theres a few ways u can do it . at the other end of tank i use a half inch ball valve and c couplings out to a water seperator then to the equipment

So I think Im correct in saying you have a regulator attached to your tank as normal, then the set up pictured at the other end...do you have different uses for each outlet?

theres a large reducer on the tank down to half inch bsp and the inlet and outlet on the reg i s half inch allso then use a 10mm bore hose conected so the line isnt restricted dropping to 3/8 th and quarter will restrict the flow

Ok, so the hose I have is 10mm with 1/4 threaded fittings each end.

So I am aiming to attach a reg with 1/2 inch outlets rather than the normal 1/4. Do I need then to make a new connection on the air hose to fit the reg?

if u are using pcl conectors u would need a reducer from the output of the regulator to the pcl conector for your hose .buying a filter reg that has a 1/4 outlet tend to be small and restrict flow

Thankyou...that actually starts to make sense to me now. So its better to have 1/2 outlets and use a reducer rather than have 1/4 oulets from the go.

PS - I'm seriously grateful for all the advice so far. I have no friends, family or colleagues who have the slightest interest in any of this stuff, so as I'm in the middle of my first restoration...the learning curve is painfully slow at times as there's nobody to call on. So cheers guys!

looking through the forum and sifting through all the posts u can come to a good conclusion without experementing wasting time and money

im not a painter but been spraying for 40 years .same here set the gun and paint viscosity without anything just a gallon oil can to test spray 1st

I'll be able to do the same in 15 years time, I hope!! I'm judging it by eye and ear at the moment but it can be a bit troublesome.

If you want use the outlet at the other end of your compressor, you can get probably an adaptor and fit a filter regualtor to it with a female quick fit connector. Or, as I prefer, fit a quick fit connector to the out put and make up a tail leading to a filter regulator, which only works out as one more female connector, a bit of pipe and a couple of fittings. It has the advantage of isolating the filter regulator from the compressor and knocks and can be wall mounted either permanently or temporarily.

I'm sure there are other suggestions out there, the key seems to be in finding a regulator with a higher flow rate than the cheapies. I bought a cheap oiler/ filter regulator package and it restricted the flow.

The reason for the 1/2 bsp is that most high flow rate regulators seem to come with them.

As I said earlier, adaptors are cheap from the plumbers. I dont think it makes any difference where you put the adaptor as you're going to need them at each end of the regulator and the hole through them is similar to your hose and quick fit connectors.

I've got a Clarke pro one at the moment and a used Norgren combined unit to go on when I can clean the oiler out or bypass it. Wasn't impressed with Clarkes spares department when I tried to order a spare filter or service kit as the disc at the top of the filter had warped from excess heat. Managed to sort it out no thanks to Clarkes.

EDIT I have maligned Clarkes, sorry! The regulator I had problems with was a Draper Pro.

I'm, maybe unjustifiably, biased against pcl connectors as I found they were restricting the flow. I made up a couple of pcl to euro and euro to pcl adaptors for some older or borrowed gear.

I wouldn't rely on the inline filter at the gun end alone to take moisture and oil out.
I keep oil well away from any airline I use to spray paint with.

i use pcl euro and c couplings depending on what im using and what length pipe i use 3/4 to the blast pot. half inch to most else and a quarter bore the last 3 meter lead
