Had some time to work on it today. Got as much of the rust off the main piece as I could using an angle grinder and a drill before trying Kurust out what was left, which did indeed convert the remains to something else, but also left an annoying rubber-y coating on a lot of it which was a pain to remove.

Found a small crack in the welds holding one of the feet on, but leaving it alone unless the foot actually breaks off.

I'd be tempted to grind out and reweld the cracked lug. If it lets go out the wrong moment you'll be on yer arris.

Cracked lug is on the front, so should only be (minimal) pressure on it when pulling the blade back out of the work.

Been debating how to mount it once finished - I don't want to dedicate a deep-ish bench to it since that would take valuable floorspace. Got two ideas right now:

1) Build a 1-1.5ft square trolley on castors and fill the bottom with gravel or some other ballast. Not convinced this would be stable enough when cutting anything thick.

2) Build a shallow bench/frame which swings away from the wall on 4 beams with pivots on either end. Not convinced the shed's frame would support this with any serious load. Maybe with a trailer prop or similar between it and the floor.

Any other ideas or thoughts?

Only one way to mount these things really and that's a dedicated pedestal drilled into the floor. A piece of H beam and plate welded on each end would suffice as a good pedestal.

Bolted all the main bits together to get them out of the way while tidying the workshop today.

Bolting a pedestal into the floor for it is a no-go - the "floor" is just plywood sat on a gravel/sand bed with the odd bit of concrete here and there.

You could always concrete in a length of H beam to the ground, I've seen that done before on farms and old workshops with cobblestone floors etc.. just sink a hole then infill concrete and mount it, gives you good working capabilities. Still not sure on the laser idea, will be interesting to see how accurate it cuts

Rented flat sadly, I'm not going to start pouring concrete around the place. I would've knocked this shed down and built something bigger/sturdier with a concrete floor already if it was mine.

I'm looking forward to seeing how much accuracy the laser gives too.
