I find with my Dyson DC04 that the very light dust settles in the inner vortex, the heavier bits round the edge of the drum. The very heavy bits stay in the pipe. Troubel is the Dyson doesn't hold much.
I had a setup using an old plastic cold water tank, I put a rubber (Metro door) seal round the top and had wooden lid with 2 holes in it. One went to the vacuum cleaner, the other to the hose. When the cleaner was switched on the vacuum held the lid down.
