Here's my old Vono pattern makers vice. It was picked up/rescued many years ago at the other halfs parents house, it was literally on its way to being thrown out & was outside on the rubbish pile. It's believed to have come from Leyland Motors.
No idea, as it's not a Record vice probably not a massive amount.
Even though i don't really use it, I'd never sell it, it has a lot of sentimental value to me (plus it's cool

I have only come across mine and Vono's - i got mine about 7 years ago from a builder of wooden boats who needed the cash, can't remember price, maybe £80.
In case you didn't know, Vono was a big furniture maker near Birmingham, UK, with foundry for bedframes, but didn't make vices for long.
Yes must admit i think the only one I've seen like mine is yours Danny. I do covet the engineers type one you have it's a beauty. Interesting that the slide is curved too on that.

note the embossed model number, also the shape and thickness of the base. the base shape suggests to me this is really old however its condition and style of the model suggests its a fairly new one

Hello, my first post here so be gentle! I bought a house with a garage last year and I finally decided to start kitting it out with tools. My first task is a work bench and a vice so I have been reading through this thread and looking through eBay/Facebook to see if I can find a smallish vintage vice for a good price. I came across this one about 15 minute from me for £40, apparently it is in working condition and just needs a bit of TLC. I have never restored a tool before but have a dremel which should be okay for some of the stuff if a bit slow. Do you think it is worth a punt?

Looks like the vice has been used but not abused, jaws look pretty clean and the rust is just surface. As long as the screw winds in and out an the quick release works you should have a goodun. Not sure a Dremel would be much use, I'd us wire wool and Emery to remove rust, clean up jaws with a file, clean and oil moving parts. Repaint if you feel the need, either way it will last for years.
Excellent, thanks for the advice. I am hoping to go and look at it before sealing the deal so I will check it all works then. Might get a wire brush for my drill for cleaning, should make life a bit easier. I am definitely not aiming for a perfect restoration like some videos on YouTube but a quick clean up and paint should do the trick. I will be sure to post photos when it's done.

Nice ! I think you might find the little one will be used more often than the larger Record. I acquired one of these dinky little vices which was seized up, but was able get it working and in a short time had it cleaned up and back in service. Restoring the vice was quite satisfying.

Nice job on the restoration! I can only hope my attempt will look so good afterwards! You are probably right that the 3" will get more use than the 4.5" I can see the anvil on the bigger one being useful for light tasks though.
