I was watching that. It was interesting but not really my thing, also I wasn't sure if there was a crack on the lower slide near the jaws on it. I was sure if I zoomed in on pics I could see something.

I have a similar vise, a Columbian Gyro-Vise. Didn't notice the apparent crack, but I was wondering what the bolt sticking out the lower back end was for ?

Edit: Had a look on my watch list again, and yeah, it is cracked right through. I wasn't going to bid anyway, but I hope who ever did buy it gets their money back.

Yes Mount Tai (some with a diamond symbol), - and the older ones are definitely better. There are some present day cheapos that look similar but are poor.

BUT - the swivel lock in all is weak or very weak - am I missing a trick? is there a knack?

Latest one to land, an early Parkinson's.
I thought this was going to be smaller than it is (it looked smallish in the pics..) However its jaws are just over 4" wide so i'm guessing it's the equivalent of a later No7.
It's very heavy, seems heavier than a later No7. I've never had one of the earlier type before & I'm rather pleased with it. To give an idea of size see 3in1 oil can on it & the Parky next to it is a later No8.
Could the green possibly be the original colour ? It's certainly been on there a long time & i can't see any traces of other colours on it.
Any info' welcomed

I have an old bolt down vice parky handy, I must say having the rear carriage machined around the slide makes the action near perfect, very nice vices there, that colour gives me an idea for mine

If I can see aright, that's a PARKINSON'S (ie before the and sons - PARKINSONS') but it's a VISE (ie after the decision to no longer use VICE) - is that right? - if we see enough of em, we might be able to date these two changes. A beaut in any case - love the shape, massive look and bent bolts plus locating pins on these two-rear-casting types.

Maybe not obvious from earlier pic, how little this is :laughing:. I found some markings on it, it's by Marples. Now that's a vice with some character. Bet it could tell a story.

It has U-bolts - otherwise disassembly/assembly would be a pain if you had to hold from above and below at the same time .... so nothing can rotate unwanted when screwing the nuts.



My example - without manufacturer's mark - could have been an attempt to move both half-nuts in opposite directions at the same time.

When the mechanism failed, it was still a good "normal" vice - QR vises are not so common in our country ...

... the workman is still given the necessary time to open and close.

Thanks to all for the great comments, much appreciated yes it is a beauty i'm really very taken with it. Apparently it came from Council Workshops - does make you wonder what is still lurking out there & in use. Perhaps it was sold off for "health & safety" reasons, only to be replaced by modern junk (I've heard of that happening). Incredible to think something this old was still earning its keep - a testament to how well built this old stuff was.

Danny I've attached another pic of the name details, any idea of the age of it based on it saying Vise & Parkinson's ?

Also does anyone know what the raised area that's been threaded is for underneath it ?
