Yeah, I never thought about it at the time, and I am a newbie to this stuff. But if I had removed the entire quarter panel and stored it safely I wouldn't be in all this pain now. That said, removing the quarter panel is no small job, probably half a day to do it right.
I think sometimes these things can look rather daunting, and as result we find workarounds that ultimately cause more problems than they solve…. And I’m speaking from experience here!
Well, a bit more done today. That swage line is coming back gradually. I went to the body shop supplies place yesterday and picked up a pot of guide coat powder which makes it easier to see.
Gradually sanding back with guide coat on reveals all the low spots so I used a long, rigid sanding block with a mix of 120, 320 and 400 strips. Then the thinnest skim of filler which was thinned out a bit with some resin from a fibreglass kit. Wait for it to go hard, then repeat the whole process, about a dozen times today.
The results are below. I’m quite happy so far but there’s at least another day of this I reckon.

Today was a great day. My brother came up to play which is always great fun. I hate that we live so far apart.
Started by final sanding, then touched up the red Raptor bedliner on the underneath where we welded on the bumper mounts.
And then we had some lunch while the Raptor dried. Nosh, yummy.
A full wipe down with panel wipe followed by a good clean of the garage, and then masking up. Christ, what a thoroughly tedious job that is. Glad my Bro was here to help.
And for the grand finale, sprayed it all in Jotun87 primer. Now, for me, that’s a serious milestone.
No pics, didn’t happen right, so here you go.

This thread has all been about me but what you guys haven’t seen is all the mechanical restoration going on, which has been done by him. Many hours in his garage on the mechanicals, the interior and vast amounts of time sourcing the hard to find parts. He’s also paid for this which is effectively funding my hobbies. Winner winner.
Of course , when it comes to putting it together again I am hoping to spend some quality time with him but the distance really doesn’t help with this. I know for a fact I will be doing the wiring. His wiring skills are somewhat, erm, wanting

I have just joined the forum, so have not seen all this up to now, but well done for persevering with it. Hopefully it will all be worth it.
Anyway, I bought a Y reg one of these in 1996. For £150. It was the same colour and in much the same state as this one, even at only 14 years old. It had failed its MOT for rust.
I took the engine and gearbox out, to put in a Triumph Herald. Sold the rolling shell for the same as I bought it for. Just another of the many cars I have had, and wish I still had.

OK, seeing as you asked, I got some pictures form my Brother. Not that many really as he has just been working busily in his garage. But see below as some examples.Why weren't we told? Where's the pictures? We need pictures?
The rear suspension and running gear, pretty much as we took it off the shell.
And how it looks after he worked for many hours refurbishing it all.
Some other bits done along the way.
And a nicely refurbished Ford type 9 gearbox. he farmed this out to a specialist, very sensible.

You're making great progress. What's the paint your brother is using on the silver and black bits? Looks really good.
