Nice job on the casting, I do a few similar jobs for a chap who restores BSA's and similar era bikes, the casting is rough old stuff compared to what you have there though,

It was surprisingly nice to weld. I was expecting loads of oil weeping out as it's a 40 year old gearbox but the filler went on like butter.

What's a silk engine?

Very aptly named.
In 1979, you'd have to have been a QC to have done £2500 on a bike.

IIRC, my dad bought his first new car that year, a VW Polo, for around the same.

It's a quick drying engineering dye that you can then scribe or mark for drilling ect.
