Brian have you got quite a lot of these rods ?? From my non pro eye I would of said the travel speed was to fast and the amps a little low and the possibility that the weld is not being deposited correctly down the joint and not taking both sides hence the slab were the arc has not made contact

Four boxes .
I will have another go tomorrow , the amps on the little Clark inverter are full on AT 90, The other welder I'm not sure that the amp control wheel is doing anything .. The welds are glowing red hot after about an inch
The rods are 6013 '2.5

Are you pushing or pulling the electrode? What bohler electrodes are they? I've used all there 6013 options pretty much and all ran fine.

Try a shallow(er) drag angle. Many 6013 exhibit a rather “runny” slag which can get ahead of you, leading to trapping of the slag. It may feel excessive when you do it; but try and see how this helps.

Bit happier with this now,I know its a bit wide but im getting a bit better with the slag traps,took your advice MichaelIV, and dipped my elbow a bit , also turned the welder up, slowed down and tried to control the arc length more,as Kent suggested.
The only thing is this is the best of a bad bunch ,i only managed to get It like this by slightly weaving which I thought on a root weld was incorrect. If I weld straight it tends to sit on one side of the joint and collect slag, I do have trouble seeing where im going and I think that's probably a big part of the problem as well.
The top bit is a different rod,just a cheap one from work,it just says rd-480, e6013 on it, the lower weld is the Bohler AWS e6013,which I was blaming as bieng a difficult rod but there's not much difference really.

Well done, Bryan. You’re making headway there. On the question of ‘weaving’, applying a wee bit of manipulation is often helpful and not harmful. Oscillating no more than the diameter of the rod (the wire, itself) is often fine. It’s been my experience that this helps significantly with 6013 in particular as it seems to assist in ‘agitating’ the puddle and helping the slag not to trap.
