Trendy restaurants use slate as place mats. Some even use them instead of plates and serving dishes because they think it looks really cool. Last time I went to a place that had them I asked if they couldn’t afford proper plates.
Well the good news is I finally managed to cut and engrave on plywood.
Like everything it's (relatively) easy when you know how.
Thinking about things after I had failed ,it was pretty obvious I was setting it to cut to fast.
The bonus for the grandkids is thay its almost immediate results unlike 3D printing.
Now to try and find some free laser files to print. @MattH kindly pointed me to a couple of box making sites.
They guy I purchased it off has files he will be sending me but he is away on holiday with his kids.
He only sold it as he was contacted by a company to see if he wanted a half price 10watt output laser and they sent him a pn entanding kit. So he will still be sourcing and using files.
All in all I managed to find sheets of perforated steel. 8 x 4 for 25 quid and I already have some aluminium strip to make some of these.
I can sell a few and fund some more ply and anodised aluminum key rings and the like etc. (When I can find some.

So you have a diode I presume? first off please throw the goggles away and buy some proper laser safe goggles as diode wave length will kill your eyes with the smallest exposure.
Second, they need an air assist, it may have been built by the previous owner, if not it needs doing, it really improves the quality of cut.
Third, make an enclosure if you dont have one and put in some extraction. The fumes are not lovely.
Forth, be aware that cutting will be slow, slow plus heat = fire. Please dont leave it alone, there are too many examples of people setting fire to sheds etc (I had a fairly minor fire last month in the CO2 and had to spend a couple of £100 repairing it.
fifth, sorry if it seems I am teaching you to suck eggs but its important safety.
For files, I buy from Etsy and Makecnc.com, there are free websites but they are often rips off of sales websites.
Also you know about boxes.py hopefully, if not have a google.

For supplies, Hobarts in Kent is my go to.

These things seem the most difficult to get hold off.
Any links to decent eye protection appreciated. The guy I had it off showed me his eye protection but I wear glasses and those won't go over my glasses.
I have got an 8 x 4 sheet of perforated steel. A electromagnetic pump for air assist.
Found a 3D print of a nozzle for the Atomstack.
And a part used sheet of polycarbonate to build an enclosure.
All ready for when I get time to use it all...lol

yep it looks quite a decent site for free stuff BUT. Rather like the 3D printers and the CNC I already want a bigger laser.. lol
To be fair the larger 3D printer I can live without. CNC I can live without BUT the things I was to produce with the laser cant be done on a smaller laser. That said it does look quite cheap to add an extension kit.
I also found a quick way to convert .CDR to .DXF so all in all pretty pleased with this week. It has actually given me incentive to create some space and declutter as quick as I can though to be fair.
I have looked into an extension kit but at 100 quid it seems expensive when ooznrst seem to sell an 800mm length of 20 x 20 for 6 quid. I hope I got that correct.
This guy also suggests two ways of solving the wiring as he was send the wrong loom.
I wonder if anyone here knows what the plugs they are using are called.?

Just use the shorter removed beams ...... that will be a dam sight more accurate than a guess ruler & pencil mark Pull it square on the final drive band tighten things up and recheck three times after moving the cross beam each time.

Try vevor or bang good. But like you say they've gone up a lot. Been meaning to buy one, I'm a 5axis cnc programmer by trade so love these and 3d printers. Good luck.

I have the laser. But finding decent priced consumables is not easy.
As an example you can buy pre decorated hipflasks for 5.99 but blank ones are no cheaper.
I was hoping to get a few bits so I can justify the effort of working on this site I started years ago. www.mistatee.co.uk
I think I would be able to work on the layouts for the dxf files, the image files for mugs when I am away with no grandkids.
It's another reason to keep decluttering to be able to walk up to a machine and use it.
It sort of bugs me why family go and buy stuff I can produce .
