Nice work , if you want to take it to the next level I'd definitely recommend going with a media mixing valve, it just works so much better than the pickup tubes.

how do the valves work I have a similar wee cabinet I was just thinking of making something with some box section or tube and a lever 15mm valve Ted in to adjust to let air into the mix

This guy built one:

That about sums it up as to all they are really. The "proper" ones you can buy aren't a lot different, just a more gradually tapered T piece.

All they do is collect the media from the bottom of the hopper and allow a small amount of air, controllable via the adjustment screw, to be sucked up along with the media.
The little bit of air stops it clumping and blocking and keeps the media flowing free as it is sucked up.

I've had one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/200472037005 for a while now so thought I'd best start tweaking it so I can use it for blasting small parts. for many years Ive been using one of these blast guns (originally from Anglo Scot Abrasives)...

I'm just in the early days of starting to use a comparable cabinet, and done some similar things. That weedy conical filter on the top right hand side is pointless (clogs very quickly), so whereas you've connected Henry in to your new lid, I installed a sink-basin waste fitting in place of the conical filter and that then feeds to an extractor pipe.

I suspect that anyone buying one of these "£100" cabinets and expecting to be able to use it straight of the box will be disappointed; it's just a chassis on which to bolt on some of your own self-creativity!

to be honest it would be easy to make your own completely if you were to alter the original and make it a larger size easy to make out of a welded frame from some 1inch x 1/8th angle and sheet panels heres my larger one it takes car wheels

It is tempting to walk past the cheapo cabinets (mines a Switzer, but they are all so similar), but they are an easy way in to blasting and depending what £/hour you rate your time at, they are not bad value. If, by the time you've got it working and learned a good bit about cabinets, you find you really do want and need a bigger cabinet, should be easy to sell it on and you'll then know what you really need.

i bought the small one just for beadblasting and it works real well with just a few mods at the time i was working 7 days a week on callouts so 2 hours work paid for the cabinet otherwise id have made it . someone of here made one out of a plastic grit bin and was quite good dunno if he lifted it from the side of the road mind
