Small log burner recommendations

Look at multifuel not just wood burners. How big is the space you are heating ? You can have a smaller fire in a slightly too big stove and not have to be feeding it every twenty minutes.

Very small, a 2kw electric heater heats it up in a matter of minutes

Small ones don't work with a glass door as there's not enough space to fit a decent sized damper to get enough air into it.

You dont need even a 1" air intake to get a big 4 kw wood stove roaring .

Burning wood requires a specific air intake, wood fires burn with most of the air coming in above the fuel and a deep ash bed which is reducing the wood to flammable gasses , coal burns with the air coming up from underneath the fuel and needs a clear well riddled grate , most of the cheap wood stoves are just guess work or copies of designs for burning coal. If you want a good burn with wood you need a top and bottom air intake, even better if the air is preheated.

That depends how much flue you have...
My burners are designed for wood and work best with the big dial on the front, which also feeds up for an extra hit as the flue gas goes round the baffle. For its size, my smallest takes big chunks of wood and will roar up or shut down enough to have hot embers in the morning. I can't get too clever on such a small stove because, well it wouldn't be small anymore. I do make multifuel stoves, they are a lot more complex and also have a riddle etc, but they are a LOT more expensive as they have a lot more materials and a lot more work in them.

I have a clearview which I rate very highly, also a Woodwarm which is much bigger and very good quality, however, being a newer ‘eco design’ has restricted air controls. I know it helps stop idiots running too low but it’s too restrictive for people who understand not to slumber.

Not sure if many offer non-eco design stoves now (think new designs have to comply) but I’d seriously try to avoid them. I’d also never have one without glass but that’s just preference.

Yes, it has an air vent on the front, and it's big enough to fit a decent sized window too. I do the same on my larger stoves...

Had a Morso Squirrel multi-fuel for a good few years - now mostly using solid fuel (its been lit most of this week).

My selection criteria? My grandad had one when I lodged with them back in the early 90's when I worked in London. He paid rather less for his than I did for mine - he fished his out of a skip!

Actually - that triggers a thought that I never considered before. He fished it, complete, out of skip, got it into an Allegro (2), out and into the back room of house on his own . . .

I had to dismantle mine and take it into the house in component form when it was delivered. I was 35 ish. I simply couldn't shift it any other way.

He would have certainly been in his mid to late 70's!! A farmer his entire life.

We've a morso squirrel here too. Lovely little stove. Seems very efficient in that there's little ash from the wood we burn.

I'd think it would be too big for a small room though.
