A pin through the beam will be above the problem .. not only underfill but a massive stress riser , think of it like a perforation on loo roll .
Thats it ,Im not writing any more on this one , as its looking like Im being nasty or picky , and Ive not been here that long , and Im really not trying to ba an ar*e.... Usually I dont have to try lol ,,, ok , Im out on this one.

thats not where the issues lie ,,,, its the winch to side plate thats the prob ,, so pinning it will in effect be above the joint that caught my eye.

Where is it that you think the weakness is? Is it part of the roller frame

Sorry for the confusion that picture is before it was fully welded it was just tacked up. So I could get the placement right. It was welded up fully after this

Yeah I like it ...I like the way you scored the steel and then bent it and then welded ...it works well ,I have used that method on stuff before ....and one day I will have a work space that size ...here's hoping ..

It's a shame all that wood is on the I beams, you could have a nice little gantry setup!

They are useful little hoists, I have one over my loft hatch and a cage to lift stuff in but wouldn't dream of posting any photos of the metalwork it hangs from! (Looks wrong but supported over two walls.)

What does it roll like with the load on? The load centreline seems to be close to one set of bearings and not shared between all four, I get the impression it may rock when moved pivoting on the loaded bearings.

I can see where your coming from but the gap is full of weld but I can see it's not full to the corner, do you think this is going to effect this.

It rolls very smoothly with no rocking in either direction

There is criticism and constructive criticism, I think you are in the constructive helpful camp. If 6 of us did that job there would be 6 different outcomes based on experience and knowledge but I think facilities, funds and available materials come into it more at home. I know some of my work would (and has) been commented on as to why I did such and such and the answer is usually because of what was to hand material and cost wise. I am used to working from the scrap bin!

Nice setup and I agree with a lot of what has been said and with both @tom2207 and @Wallace .

I would put another run on the welds, preferable with stick unless you have a big mig.
I would also add a couple of small gussets each side to stop it spreading and coming off the beam.
It a simple and quick addition and you can't be too careful with lifting gear.

The beam and everything attached to it needs to be man enough to take the full load the winch can apply plus a bit.
By design it should be able to take 4 or 5 times the SWL.
With a simple winch you have no way of knowing what you are lifting and if an engine or whatever is stuck it’s very easy and tempting to give it a wee bit more.
I’m pretty sure what you have will take the weight but it always better to err on the safe side.

Also how are the bridging blocks fitted between the joists?
If it’s just a couple of 4 inch wires I’d look at beefing that up and maybe adding a couple more.
I like the way the bridging is spreading the load into two joists but it is only as strong as the worst connection. A few more bridging blocks, staggered for ease of fitting, would also stiffen up the joists and stop them twisting. Connecting to each joist or bridger would just stiffen up the whole assembly.

None of this would take long, cost much or mean you would have to redo any of you'r work but it would increase the factor of safety which just seem sensible to me.
If you are like me this could well be the last time you give this a second thought and you could use it for many years and never inspect it again. If it's overbuilt you can get away with things like that.

Of course I’m no expert and it's just my opinion so feel free to do as you wish.

Thanks for that lots of things to take into consideration and when I take it down to paint and clean up I will add some gussets and look into making the bridge between the joists a bit of a stronger connection.

It's easy to get carried away . . . for years I lifted engines in and out with my dad old chain winch thingie - pressed steel housing, winding handle with a friction clutch, a spring loaded ratchet mech that never seemed to work - the handle wound a roller chain in and out the housing, the housing and handle descending, or rising as the hook was on the housing. Lifted whole front of my Renault 11 with it once . . . the whole thing hung from what looked like an M3 screw through the last link of chain to the hanging loop - probably a BA size as it was a bit old to be metric in England.

I shudder a little at that little screw when I think about it now - although I would still be using it, but the spindle through the friction clutch sheared - and that was rather larger than M3 . . .
