I envy you lot with solid fuel heating, we had a Parkray for many years. The house was always warm, the main structure was warm as it ran 24 hours a day, yes it needed work to keep it alight as a trade off. A jacket potato wrapped in foil in the ash box for a couple of hours for supper, can’t beat it, onions also worked well. It eventually started to leak, so I changed it for a gas Baxi, but it never felt the same.

I know what you mean about the fabric of the house being warm. Even if the Rayburn goes out, the stone around it emits heat for days. We have a 6' long 12" x12" granite beam above it and that stays warm for ages.

thats because the walls became a heat store whilst the stove was on as the material heated up

a heat store can be a wall or floor, its why i like that sand store myself as does the same thing

I imagine it's also one of the reasons they used to fill chimney stack cavities with brick rubble.

We have a 3ft thick wall runs through the centre line of our place. Once warm stays warm.

the chimney breast is an early version of a rocket stove with a heat store as the chimney breast is the heat store itself

times changed and now we come back down before we exit up the chimney but we have lost the heat store of the chimney but the system is more economical with less fireing of the fire

whilst i like the rayburn and esse and aga models they are somewhat outdated if you was forced to install a cleaner to make your stove more cleaner i think it would upset many

Ours was a Cotswold stone cottage, 2’6” thick walls acting as a heatstore. Now live in a 1970 bungalow, fully insulated but when the heating goes off the temperature quickly starts to drop.
