It should say on the contactor the coil voltage, so if you are getting 26v hopefully your coil will be a 24v coil in which case you just need to replace it.

Any electrical factors should have one, about £15 max.

happy days, thanks for all your help, i'll get one tomorrow and report back on here. out of interest, do the contactors play up a lot or could this be through lack of use/sitting idle? in which case I may get a spare

Normally they wear out through over use but that doesn't apply in your case, could be it was just a duff one waiting to fail.
I did buy a few brand new Italian contactors at auction, and they all failed after a few hours use when the plastic linkage in the switch side failed, obviously a duff batch which someone offloaded at the auction! Luckily I hadn't paid much for them so I chalked it down to experience.

happy days, new contactor arrived today and took around five minutes to fit. i'm up and running again, thanks for all your helps guys
