I should have measured the pipe diameter whilst I was there! what we guessing? 100mm or less?

Looks to go upstairs still - so capping it at the bottom might cause issues with it filling with liquid, leaving it open might cause worries about what's leaking? . . . capping closer to the upstairs connection might be better?

Yes it's joined to both properties

Looks like what used to be called an anti vac pipe, to stop the sinks gurgling. Plumber I knew had a good day going along a block of flats cutting them all off and weighing them all in!

Probley what ever has been used to bung up the pipe behind the tiling has dropped out! Now there getting smell from the "stink stack" coming back down the pipe. Or the top of the "stink stack" may be blocked.

Seperate vent pipes were normal years ago before the modern combined soil and vent pipe became common place.
The vent stack would be connected to most, if not all waste and toilet connections.
I've got an old plumbing book somewhere with good diagrams of this, I'll see if I can dig it out and post some pictures.

As above its an old 2 stack system where they would run a separate vent pipe before single stack systems became the norm. The vent pipe looks like it ties back into the main stack above the highest connection ie into the dry section. If you cut and cap it then the toilet flush might not do its job as there wouldnt be any air coming down the vent pipe to allow the water to flush away, however if the stack is 4" and the toilets not miles away from the stack I recon it would just vent like a more modern single stack system and would be ok.

Hi, It could be a rat or something has crawled in there and died, Once decomposition has finished the smell should fade.

Its a different kind of smell decomp critters smell different this is deffinalty a drain/ water kind of smell

Are you sure you haven't got a blockage /partial blockage further down underground?
A collapsed pipe or joint with stuff sitting backing up will send a smell up, maybe venting into the void.

everything is free flowing as it should I did check all that toilet bath shower even the kitchen sink and washing machine

I asked the tennant that question the other day funnily enough.
It is not wet under the house below so I think not.
Also I can see the basin and bath waste pipes exiting out of the wall into a seperate smaller diameter stack pipe.

No liquid bone dry and no smell either but the smell may only get forced down when a toilet is flushed
