I have two DS420 Hearses. This one is 1970 and is lead loaded. I also have a 1977, that is not lead loaded. I assume at some point in the 1970s they stopped. This one is by Wilcox, the other is by Startin Jnr, so it could also be a difference in the coach builder?
Sadly the 1977 is being broken as we speak, because I don't think I could ever weld it, its just so bad!
Or it could be a bug. I have pretty much what you just described as well, 2:00pm on Saturday, had that conjested head feel, by evening it felt like I was swallowing barbed wire, copius quantities of brown (blood filled) mucus draining from the back of my sinuses. Sunday started on the Codral and Soothers/Difflam which helped, today (Monday) started to loose my voice and lungs starting to tighten, so off to the Docs and now on Rulide.
I think I got mine from my wife who came back ill after an interstate flight down South and back, or else from my brother who came up to visit from the same city (he was also ill.)
Could be just some bug going around. If it is the same bug that my missus and brother had then it might take a couple of weeks to get over it, it's nasty!
Again, I didn't check the original posting date, My bad! I just go and see what are the new posts and spotted this thread. So I thought it was current.
Cheers Jugs. Whilst i am new to welding i have been working on classic cars for a few years.
The petrol can is empty, like almost all classic Jags and Daimler's from the 60's and 70's this car has two petrol tanks (I have a 1967 S-type and a 1977 DS420 Hearse, as well as this 1970 DS420 Hearse). Its bad practice to mix the petrol from the tanks, as often one tank the petrol has gone off or has water ingress. I emptied the first tank in to another can, I then came to empty the second in to that one, but the tank was empty and the empty can got left there! But you are right, its bad practice to have even an empty petrol can anywhere near a source of ignition!
Car support, I'm not sure if it shows in the photos but the car is on 2 axle stands, there is also a jack (currently taking no weight) and finally the blocks as backup backup!
You know its so annoying, I can get text book flat nice penetrating welds on a bench. But under a 41 year old rotting hearse... Although saying that, this car is mint, these are really the only holes!
if your not botherd in takeing them out your better off haveing the fuel tanks full to the brim of fuel, rarther than being empty of liquid but full of vapours&air/oxygen,that will explode if ignited.instead of just burning.think about it.and watch out for were the tank/filler neck vent is!
as a welder working in the petrochem industry ive welded onto live fuel vessels&pipelines with no problems.but i dont recomend just anyone doing it uless you know what your doing!!
p.s before any wise cracks,i was not working on morning of the 11/12/08 at the buncefield site, but i would of loved to of been their when it went up!!lol
Sorry I just don’t agree. I will always continue to drain my tanks before welding. I think that, assuming the tank is sealed in both occasions id rather that there be less fuel for the explosion. Id rather the tank deform and split with a flash than explode in a molten fire ball with 40 litres of petrol.
Like you said you, are a pro industrial welder, working on million pound piping, I suspect the BP profit risk analysis says your life isn’t worth empting the line anyway... As the fine from HSE will be less than the profit lost from emptying the line.... -BP's record in this area is quite an interesting area in itself.
I am well aware that dropping a lit match in to petrol will often go out, but then shaking the same container and then dropping another match will cause a huge bang!
Its a bit irrelevant in this situation though, as i had to weld were the tanks sit, so i had to remove them to get in there. They are under the coffin slab and a sod to remove anyway so they had to be empty to remove because of the tight fit and weight!
i can see were your comeing from, but the tank will explode if its empty as their are vapours&air preasant in it,if its full the fuel will only burn,i know a few 'home car welding' cases that have gone badly wrong, when i used to do car welding favours on a sunday to save time takeing tanks out when haveing to weld 'next' to the tank i all ways told owner to brim them, but thay put their faith in me never any problems.
'always have a (in date&tested) fire extinguisher to hand¬ need it,then not to have one&need it'.ive had so much drumed into me over the years that what may alarm most people is all in a days work for me.just rember a flame needs 3 things to burn, you only need to take one iterm out to stop it or fail to make it start in the first place.
any how i myself have a soft spot for the DS420 shame thay dont make them any more such a lovely looking motor with class, unlike all the modden box carrying cars, and i will stick me neck out here and say i also love seeing them out on the banger tracks in the heart braker meetings being given their final run before the crusher, seen so many end up like this thats why thay are getting thin on the ground, sad i know but its beter than just going straight into a scrap yard without one final blast,if i had the room&spare money i would have one for a sunday runner about for a while.keep up the work with yours,be nice to see it when its finished, compleat with a box in the back?i know were a mk1 granny hearse is sitting as it was to good to race at the time, have to see if it needs a new owner!
