SORN car tax rules?

The bit about SORN that annoys me - it seem to be ~SORNed the moment you press "enter" on the declaration, regardless of whether you do it one day into the month, or the last second of it - meaning you either lose most of that month or you get the most out of it. I know I won't be taxing it at the end of the month, so I want to SORN it ready and continue to use it for the rest of the month I paid for . . .

Some years ago, I bought Fiat coupe for the engine - SORNed it little good little boy . . .got a reminder the next year . . . so re-SORNed it . . . got a reminder . . and another . . and another - got seven in total. Rang up to check it was actually SORNed . . .

The next year - no reminder, just the £100 fine . . .

They changed it the year after for one shot process.

It only really penalises those of us who try to be lawful and register things correct - those who used to not bother registering, taxing or insuring . . still don't . . .

The other thing that annoys me is car tax if the car isn't sold on the last / first day of the month.
The seller can't claim a tax refund so loses what's left of this months tax, the buyer has to backdate the tax to the first of this month.
Buyer and seller both have to pay tax for the month the car is sold

I got caught for 2 bike the same as you on the first year. Not happy.

My road registered miniature traction engine is zero tax and MOT exempt - agricultural tractor - but I have to fill in a V112 form every year at the post office as DVLA don't put this on there data base, forget to do it and I will be fined.

I have a car which I can't sorn, 1966 MGB GT, I have tried so many times and it will not change over so I did it again, printed out the paperwork to show it sucessful but it is still showing due tax even though it is technically tax free, if I try and tax it they want money so something is wrong with how it is setup

Does the V5 show "Historic" class? If not, you have to take it to a main post office with a MOT exemption form to get it changed. Unlike MOT, tax exemption is not automatic on date.

About 5 years ago I got a letter from DVLA to say my taxed & mot exempt bike had no insurance - the law at the time said I needed to insure it or declare it sorn.

Things I learned :
No need to insure a vehicle if it's on Sorn. you *DO* need to insure if it's taxed.

Well, if it's taxed it won't be SORN and if it's SORN it won't be taxed, because it's automatically done.

So basically all you need to know is - if your vehicle is not insured, SORN it.

The result of computers and algorithms replacing people - unfortunately I believe it will get worse. "Oh" - and if you do manage to make contact with a human being on the phone to discuss such a problem, they will be at the other side of the world and will barely speak English.

Back in the day, I used to do a few "cut and shut" jobs. Don't know about the situation now, but once a vehicle had been written off by an insurance company in any way, to put it back on the road, it had to be taken to a VOSA (now DVSA) depot to be thoroughly inspected.

So don't be surprised if you get a letter at some point asking you to do this.

I had the same conundrum with my 67. Went to the local PO and it was so simple I was almost speechless.

Fast forward 1 year and I’ve just had my road tax (RFL) reminder for £0. Went online, completed the necessary and all done.

I used to like it when I went to the Post Office to renew the historic RFL, and they asked if I wanted six months free tax, or twelve.
