Space saving tricks/ideas

I have a (bad) habit of storing tools in other people's workshops....

I wondered whose tools I was using today.

Poundland has some great black storage boxes with lids. I have used dozens of them to sort out my accumulated junk. Masking tape sticks well on them so perfect for labelling.

If you are buying them make sure the lid fits. Last ones I bought were moulded badly & the lids didn't fit!

I challenge you to find someone who stores all their used ones individually. They were all together in a box when I got them I don't see how a few drawer openings are going to affect them any more than rattling about in a big tub. I sure ain't going to be replacing UNF and Whitworth taps and dies with new ones for a few dings.

Mine are stored similar to yours, though i do try to keep the plastic tubes the mills come in. Only difference I do, is some anti slip matting in the drawer bottom. Not that it makes much odds, but my drawers are some what more tatty than yours.

Oh and I like tesco delivery boxes, or the not quite so high asda ones, as they are free and stack nicely in pairs on my shelfs.

Its amazing how freely the tesco boys give them away when you give them proper free range eggs.

Not strictly space saving but is quite nifty.

Fitted a power point to my extraction arm at the weekend. Should have done it ages ago, it saves having an extension cord lying about and it's really useful. To the point that it's almost be worth having an overhead arm just for the power supply. Almost.

This is it without the electric cable - hopefully you can imagine.

It is all earthed.

Are those commercial dividers or did you make them?

I made them. I got some strips thin gauge steel cut at 45mm (I think) wide on my mate's guillotine then just cut them off at the drawer length and width. To make the dividers I simply took a 5" grinder with a thin cutting disk and cut notches half way across at regular spacings. Quick and easy to make and you can tailor the size of the divisions as you like.

Had to do a small turning job, took about 15mins. That didn't include the 20mins to put motor on lathe + pull lathe away from wall (after jacking it onto trolley) then doing the whole thing in reverse after. Single garage is full of Land Rover. I also had to move deep freezer to end of garage under the bench. THIS in turn meant building a new bench at approx. shoulder height. THEN building a platform to bring me up to the right height for the bench.
I need to move the motor so it sits above the lathe instead of at the back.
