It’s quite essential to take the dust cap off and Centre the coil, otherwise it may rub against the magnet

The dust cap is really well stuck and is keeping the cone in shape nicely, if I go near it the paper cone will be destroyed

The cone support is the only mechanical centring.

The cone is supported at the base by a concertina shaped thing so its all well lined up, you really have to push the cone out of place to feel it catching anything so its just deciding on glue

Yep that’s the way to do it, also helps if you have a steady hand and nerves of steel

That concertina thing is your suspension, thing of it as a damper in a car.

So not thinking about it any longer, if it works it works, if it doesn't it doesn't!
So right or wrong ive gone with bog standard PVA, 1st coat on the old glued surfaces of the cone and frame just to seal the old glue remains and left to dry, the foams conform to the cone nicely so it was just a case of sploshing more glue on the cone and foam, the foam could be just dropped into place with an initial bit of light pressure and plenty of time to centre it

The PVA dries clear so thats it done, just the outer to do now which hovers a few MM above the frame, going to find something the right diameter to hold the outer down when I glue it

its always been replace the speaker itself by putting in new speakers

but if you want to do so

Ive been re- coning speakers for many years , usually for burned out voice coils , its a time consuming job and even worse if the cone comes as a flat pack like EV , you actually have to form the cone , some videos of folk doing JBL control 1s by just swapping the foam and using white wood glue to get a bit of slide on the foam , it may work , personally on cheap domestic stuff I would just find a replacement cone that fits , some of the car stuff moves over quite well so dont limit yourself to hifi stuff , B and O tvs for example used Phillips tubes back in the day , the case was pure B&O but the electronics often were very run of the mill . Airflex is really the ideal glue , it was supplied by EV but was an eyewatering price , it was the only thing that worked well on dust caps and spider tears though as it never set fully hard ,,, sort of like Uhu or the likes , but it went on white and dried clear .

So thats the outer glued and left overnight

Happy with that considering the state of them, yet to test but feels nice

did you check the voice coil wasnt rubbing first ,,,, bit late now . so fingers crossed.

Perfect, so we'll supported with the suspension bit at the bottom of the cone

lol ,, ive about 14 control 1s that need doing , foam deterioration is a well known issue on these . yet ive other cones that are 25 years old or more and are like new ,,,, guess thats how the cookie crumbles ,,, or the foam fragments .

I used to use the sticky, cloth Elastoplast roll to fix ripped cones. Audiophile I am not!
