Splined shaft

Delving into the dumper clutch the cross shaft is pumped, I also had to cut it on half to get it out due to a nasty cotter pin that took a shade over a ton of pressure to get out in the press.

Anyway, I need one of these

£108 looks a piece of pee to make except for the splines..
19mm 48 splines, seems to be a steering column size, is there anywhere that sells splined shafts? Or anyone who can cut splines want some money

What’s damaged on the original that you need a new shaft? If it’s not the splines I’d be looking at making a new section as far as you need then pinning/welding the old splined section on

HPC Gears do it.

I’ve used them a lot for gears but it was after a query on here someone pointed out they do shaft as well. Bought some and it was fine.

There is someone else that was recommended but I can’t think. I’ll try and search back.

I'd very much doubt you'd get anybody to machine the splines on a one off shaft for less than £108.

It's an option but prefer a new solid shaft, both ends of the shaft are heavily worn to the point the splines have slightly worn away, to clean it up the splined end will be a bit short and won't have full engagement in the clutch arm.

HPC Gears do it.

Just had a look but looks like heavy duty transmission type splined shaft

Unfortunately the new complete shaft might be your cheapest and quickest option then

That shaft is 8 hours to make for a machinist with a spline cutting machine be it gear shaper, hobber, etc.

8 x £45 = £360

£108 is cheap

Edit: £108 including VAT, that's very cheap.

I did this one for a customer once and 108, it is still cheap and no one would make it for that price.

It can be done in a lot less than 8 hours. I think I did this one for a customer in about 4

Does the finished part need any heat treatment? Don't forget to factor in the cost of that too.

One offs of any part are expensive. Buying a finished component from a supplier who bought a batch lot is most likely to be cheaper.

You might get two from that as it's splined both ends and 48" long! Good to have a spare!

Looking at the OP's original link pic, the one in your link would need much further machining in order to do the job? His looks to have oil holes which would suggest it's got a oilway running it's length?

Just guessing.....

For £108 just buy it.

Even you find someone to make one for less you are still in the realms of "If it doesn't fit that's tough"

With all due respect, "Looks easy to make" is often said by people who don't have the knowledge/skills/equipment to actually make something.

On many occasions most us can make/do something cheaper but often it's better/easier/more sensible to just pay the money.

Service from L&S Engineers is very good, if they have it you will get it next day.

That shaft will do fine, an hour or so on the lathe will be done.

Both ends have grease nipples hence the holes, only drilled to the grease hole.

Everyone saying just buy the made part, no. the only thing I don't have the capacity to do is cut the splines, I can and have made much more complex parts. I'd sooner spend double what the ready made part costs and buy a dividing head, thought this place was about making stuff? All I asked was if anyone knew where to buy splined shaft

why not just make a straight shaft , and a lever on the end and pin it so no splines needed . depending on the load and what its doing etc or taper the end and make the lever to suit that like a cam gear . woodruff key , lots of options , if you have space to spare .

You also asked if anyone could cut the splines for money. Problem is that is a time consuming job and so will cost more for the splines than the whole shaft bought off the shelf. You then would have to graft the splines on to your shaft unless you send a Part made shaft to the person cutting the splines.
I could cut the splines for you but after I've charged you for set up time and doing the job plus postage back and forth it will be more than £108 unless I work for peanuts.
I do make spline shafts for repair jobs but this is only when the customer cannot get a replacement elsewhere so they have no choice or scrap their restoration.

It's a lot of faffing about.

People sometimes ask me why I make or repair stuff I can buy off the shelf. My reply is "because I like to".
